J-Press says the robbery was at Exelco Diamond. There were two men who are around 180cm tall and "looked foreign". A report says that one had a beard and looked South American - perhaps he was wearing a poncho - while the other was white and wore a blue suit. The whitey used a spray on the staff which caused some minor facial injuries while his accomplice grabbed the swag.

NHK used graphical blue and red cyllander people to explain what happened:

- Blue cylinder number 1 walks into shop, goes straight to the glass case with tierra, starts working on it with some sort of tools.
- 3 red cylinders watch him
- Blue cylinder number 2 walks in, sprays 3 red cylinders with liquid
- 2 blue cylinders walk out together
- The heist took 30 seconds

It's no rumor. I was there in Ginza Thursday afternoon when that happened. There were those undercover civilian renta-cop cars with patrol sirens going back and forth the streets trying to find the suspects on foot on the crowded sidewalks. Those guys had already long escaped and gone. :shake:

I guess the shop should have invested in some more heavy duty padlocks if they had a $2 million investment. The more I think of it, I think the whole thing was staged to make it look like a robbery. The escaped suspects knew exactly how to rip off the shop. There was minimal security. It was just too easy.

I bet you the jewelry shop tried to collect insurance. If not, those guys were pretty dumb and they that'll learn them next time. Alright, I will stop rambling on about my conspiracy theories about now..

Pink Panther link in Ginza theft
Gomiuri
The Metropolitan Police Department suspects that a jewelry theft on June 14 in Ginza, Tokyo, was committed by a pair of members belonging to the Europe-based crime ring known as the Pink Panther.

The MPD found that one of the thieves pried open two showcases in a matter of seconds by inserting a screwdriver through a two-millimeter opening and took out a tiara worth 200 million yen and a necklace worth about 84 million yen without leaving any fingerprints behind.

As the theft was committed swiftly in broad daylight, investigators suspect their method was similar to that employed in March 2004 when jewelry worth about 3.5 billion yen was stolen from different jewelry shop in Ginza by members of the Pink Panther....more...

I suppose that the Japanese version of Inspector Jacques Clouseau will be on the case.

No, unfortunately, their Inspector JC happens to be too busy with other his assigned duties as the Governor of Tokyo!

The European crime ring is named after the Pink Panther series of comedy films as the crime group hides its loot in a manner similar to the criminals in the movies.

and... what manner is that exactly?

Yomiuri: French link to spray used in heist
Tear gas sprayed by two thieves during a June heist in Ginza, Tokyo, that netted jewelry worth 280 million yen was purchased two years ago at a military surplus store in Marseille, France, it has been learned. The spray is treated as an item under embargo, and apparently was wrapped in black vinyl tape when smuggled into Japan to avoid detection by airport security, the Metropolitan Police Department said. The thieves are believed to be members of a Europe-based crime ring known as the Pink Panther. The MPD suspects the syndicate has a base in the southern French city. According to the MPD, the two thieves entered the Exelco Diamond Tokyo store in Ginza at about 5 p.m. on June 14, and one sprayed tear gas at a clerk. They pried open two showcases and stole a tiara and a necklace. A 25-centimeter-tall spray can swathed in black vinyl tape was found on a street about 400 meters from the store. The label under the tape said the product was made in France...The MPD also believes the thieves used a bicycle found near the can to reach a getaway car parked some distance from the crime scene. The MPD suspects the pair headed to Narita Airport and left Japan immediately after the robbery.

The police have just issued an arrest warrant. I'm hoping the news will appear in English so I can avoid figuring out the katakana.

Say one good thing about the Pink Panther bandits...they sure knew where to go to ensure they'd bump into Inspector Clouseau.
