'Diaper girls' -- Japan's 'final form of slob'

Mulboyne just tweeted:
Fun new Japanese "trend" for the overseas press. Women wearing diapers to save going to the toilet: http://t.co/MyTfqD3i

The final form of slob? ..."Diaper girls"
SPA magazine | 2012.09.28(Google Translate)
...
the final form of such a slob women... Kaori Adachi, OL (pseudonym, 25 years old), who works in real estate company in Tokyo proudly proclaims:
"I'm using disposable diapers...instead of sanitary napkins, which {daily] wearing is normal." Wow, she said she regularly wears diapers in order to absorb the urine. Rather than focusing on a level of anti-leakage of urine or something, but you're using it as a "instead of going to the toilet."

I doubt that a french bulldog is worthy and GOO.N diapers may be beyond the reddit comprehension level.

Himeji chemical plant blast threatens diaper supply

An explosion at a large Japanese chemical plant has sparked fears of a global shortage of disposable diapers, a report Sunday.

A tank at chemical producer Nippon Shokubai’s factory in Himeji city, Hyogo Prefecture, exploded Saturday, killing a firefighter and injuring 35 other emergency service workers who responded to a callout, the fire service said.

The company has a 20% global share of superabsorbent polymer, which is used in the production of diapers, the Sankei Shimbun daily said.

If the operation of the factory is suspended for a long time, it could affect production of disposable diapers, the newspaper said.

The company produces 320,000 tons of superabsorbent polymer at the Himeji plant annually, the Sankei said.

Nippon Shokubai had planned to boost its production to meet the growing demand for disposable diapers in China, the paper said.

Himeji plant explosion may affect diaper supply

The Sept. 29 blast at Nippon Shokubai Co.'s plant in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, has raised concern over the supply of disposable diapers, as the chemical firm was a major supplier of raw materials used in the product.

A prolonged suspension of operations at the factory would adversely affect disposable diaper production. Although diapers are not expected to run out soon, some retailers have started taking precautions.

Yamazawa Chemical, a drugstore chain with about 50 stores in Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures, has decided to exclude Proctor & Gamble's Pamper's disposable diapers when it holds a special sale in late October.

While the retailer has sufficient stock for now, it is concerned the product will not last because sales of the diapers usually double during promotions.

"We needed to take this step just to make sure we don't run out [of diapers]," a Yamazawa official said.

Nippon Shokubai is the world's largest producer of superabsorbent polymer (SAP), a urine-absorbing agent, with 25 percent of the market. It also is the world's third-largest producer of acrylic acid--a raw material of SAP--with a share of about 15 percent.

It is believed that P&G purchases 70 percent to 80 percent of the SAP it uses to make disposable diapers from Nippon Shokubai. Since the explosion, P&G has started negotiations with overseas chemical firms to purchase necessary materials.

P&G is the third-largest producer of disposable diapers in Japan, with 20 percent of the market, following Unicharm Corp. with 40 percent and Kao with more than 20 percent.

Unicharm and Kao acquire SAP mainly through overseas suppliers, which makes it unlikely consumers would face a shortage of disposable diapers at stores.

However, according to a major baby and children's products company, sales of disposable diapers have increased by about 10 percent to 30 percent at its shops since around Sept. 30--the day after the explosion and fire at the plant.

The increase is believed to have been caused mainly by mothers who bought more disposable diapers than usual out of concern of a possible shortage. The company said it doubled its orders to manufacturers to meet the spike in demand.

There is concern, however, that if more consumers buy up disposable diapers, it could trigger a shortage or a hike in prices.

As an aside, I was surprised that diapers are so much more expensive in the US as compared to Japan. That was a long time ago, but it seems not to have changed.
