Rare 90 year old house in Chiyoda-ku to be demolished

The 90 year old Kashiwayama Residence in Kanda-Sudacho, Chiyoda-ku, is going to be demolished soon due to deterioration and redeveloping. The sheet copper house dates from the Taisho era. It survived the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923 and the air raids during WWII.

The 3-storey wooden-frame house has a sheet copper facade and a European-style mansard roof. The 1st floor was a small shop, while the owner lived on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The 85 year old owner, Kazuko Kashiwayama, began living here in 1949. In those days, a 3-storey home was rare, and coupled with its modern exterior, it stood out in the neighborhood.

I might take a look as there's an event with interior viewing and I need to wonder over to Akihabara some day soon

I swung past last night and got a tour of the place. It was quite interesting, especially as it had been lived in until a couple of weeks ago. Will post some pics later.

BTW, WTF is up with Akihabara? First time I've been there for a while, and it is *crawling* with an infestation of "maids".

Yeah, in the late 90s it was just child porn and school-girl rape manga. Nothing like the kind of horrors you see now.

I always get down at kanda station for RC Champs, and i don't know for akihabara, but kanda is certainly not wheelchair accessibul since it's already overweight gaijin hostile... (awfully long corridors and stairs...)

Pics here, apologies for the poor quality, my camera is even crappier than the ambient lighting.

It's actually built with proper wood from trees, probably better quality than many a post-war formaldehyde silo.

Apparently no-one knows the exact date it was built, but it's probably noted along with the master carpenter's name on the ridge beam (not sure if that's the correct term), which is only visible once they take the place apart.

I wonder if they will even hunt for that? I would suck if they didn't... that is a pretty cool piece of history they are tearing down there.

It sounded like they will be looking for that, there seems to be quite a project on documenting that place.

I wonder if somebody will rescue it and move it out to pasture with all of the other old buildings. There is a fantastic outdoor museum in Kawasaki that has a bunch of old Edo period buildings set into "villages".

I always take visitors to it as it is a great day trip.

Time to call in Alex Carr.

Good one in Koganei, too, which is more Taisho/Meiji era, so appropriate, perhaps.

Yup, Edo-Tokyo Open-air Architectural Museum, by coincidence we went there yesterday, quite nice it is too.

One of the guides at the Akihabara building said something along the lines that they'd looked into preserving it, but it was structurally too unsound.

The house was still standing as of yesterday... Looks like the modern building surrounding it on two sides is part of the same redevelopment project.

There were deals to be found though in the late 90's. The maid cafes brought with them the tourists, which brought the awful prices. I'm sure there's some chicken & egg in there somewhere, but even though a major thing was indeed tentacle rape, Akihabara was still underground, and I dare say far better.
