Foreign tourists climbing Mt Fuji, a key symbol of Japan, are returning home with a lifetime souvenir this summer. About 400 foreign climbers are expected to get an inaugural Mt Fuji climbing certificate issued by Yamanashi Prefecture between July 1 and Aug 30. Foreign climbers can receive the certificate for free if foreign travel companies organizing Mt Fuji expeditions apply in advance. The certificate is 18 centimeters by 13 cm and emblazoned with a photo of Japan's tallest mountain. It is available in Korean, Chinese, English and Japanese but more than 80% of foreign climbers favor the Japanese-language version

FUJIKAWAGUCHI, Japan -- If you look up from the forests at the foot of Japan's Mount Fuji, the volcano's graceful slopes rise into the distance and peak in a nearly symmetrical, snowcapped cone.

If you look down in the forests, however, you see something much less elegant: trash. Lots of it. Just below the surface of leaves and topsoil are discarded microwave ovens, construction debris, broken office furniture. Even rusting refrigerators.

Mount Fuji, the pride of the nation and symbol of the Japanese soul, is a huge garbage dump.

"We've found everything from household trash to broken TV sets and other appliances," said Mayumi Wakamura, who heads periodic cleanups of the mountain. "Sometimes we find hazardous materials like leaky old car batteries."

Nobody knows how much trash is buried on Fuji, but Wakamura's Fujisan Club says it collected 84,150 kilograms (187,000 pounds) of illegally dumped garbage from the mountain's slopes in the 12 months through March...more garbage...

Hey, there is nothing more enjoyable in life than throwing a refrigrator off a cliff. TV's are good for imploding but the sheer fun of watching a fridge door fly off at a random angle doing 60 can hardly be beat.

Yomiuri: Foreign climbers of Mt. Fuji to get new certificate

The Yamanashi Prefecture Tourist Association will issue an upgraded certificate of achievement whose design includes an image of Mt. Fuji to foreigners who reach the summit of the 3,776-meter mountain beginning in July, association officials said. As the present A5-sized certificate uses mainly Japanese characters, it has not been popular with foreign climbers. Beginning this summer, the certificate will be enlarged to B5 size and the background will be filled with an image of Mt. Fuji. Recipients of the certificate will be able to choose from four different languages, including English and Chinese. The number of foreign climbers of Mt. Fuji has steadily risen. Last year alone, out of 305,000 climbers, 30 percent were foreigners. Though Mt. Fuji climbing routes also exist from Shizuoka Prefecture, an official from the Yamanashi prefectural tourist board noted that for foreign climbers to receive the certificate, they must climb it from the Yamanashi side.

---Petty Officer 1st Class Corey Baughman got more than he bargained for when he decided that a winter climb of Mount Fuji would be the perfect adventure before separating from the Navy and shipping off to the States.
Baughman, Petty Officer 3rd Class Adam Andryc and Petty Officer 1st Class Dillon Mudloff were within 100 yards of the summit of Japan’s highest mountain earlier this month when they decided to turn back because of the weather.
Suddenly, a climber went hurtling by from above.
“It was surreal,” Baughman recalled. “I thought for sure the guy was dead.”

They got within 100 meters of the summit, but decided to turn around as conditions deteriorated. “We don’t easily walk away from the summit when we’re that close,” Mudloff said. “We admitted defeat.”
The trio decided to take some pictures and video at the highest point they had reached.
“It was definitely a good experience up until that point,” Andryc said.
Then, as the video camera rolled, a 60-year-old Japanese man fell from a ridge above. Mudloff said the man went flying by them at what appeared to be 40 mph, falling 500 meters in an instant.

...the story drags on and on...The Japanese man was flown to a hospital in Kanagawa prefecture, where he is recovering from fractured legs and frostbite, according to a spokesman for Shizuoka prefectural police in Gotenba.
Baughman’s toes should be back to normal in six months, he was told. He returned to the U.S. on Monday.
