Oslo Overtakes Tokyo as World's Most Expensive City
Aug. 19 (Bloomberg)-- The Norwegian capital Oslo has displaced Tokyo as the world's most expensive city after deflation and currency depreciation reduced the cost of living in Japan, a report by UBS AG said.

That's funny, I've just read this week's "Economist" and they had also the latest update on cost of living and Tokyo was first, then Oslo and Zurich. They said that Paris (7th) had overtaken London (8th) thank to the strong euro. I also noticed than Seoul was more expensive than Frankfurt ! Hardly believable since everything is so cheap in Seoul (at least half of Tokyo).

I assume that Seoul ranks "expensive" because wages are lower compared to expenses (and "service Zangyo"* overtime is much greater).

*What are the Korean words for "service Zangyo" and karoshi ?

Tell me what they mean in English and I'll check my E-K dictionary.

Seoul ranks so high due to housing costs. Some districts (Kangnam's the worst) have horrendously expensive housing. Food, utilities and other items are pretty cheap. I spent so much more on food in Tokyo that I do in Korea. The cost of an average meal in Tokyo (800 or so) can feed you for a whole day in Korea.

"service Zangyo" is 'unpaid overtime'.

"karoshi"
is 'death from overwork'.

I assume the Koreans are more Japanese than the Japanese about both.

Hmmmm. Those would have colloquial terms and I wouldn't recognize them in my dictionary under the normal "overtime" definitions. I'll get an answer when I'm back in Korea (less than 2 weeks to go!).

Yes, Koreans work ridiculous amounts of overtime - for no pay - and I'm sure they've got a good term for being worked to death.

Here's yet another article....but this place is WAY too expensive.

Nairobians must work 3 hrs for Big Mac, Tokyoites 10 minutes
(Kyodo /Aug 20 )
...survey of 70 cities around the world, the average worker in Nairobi must work 185 minutes, the longest among the cities surveyed, to buy a Big Mac.

But workers in Tokyo, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami need only work 10 minutes, the shortest, followed by those in New York with 12 minutes, Hong Kong with 13 minutes and Toronto, Montreal and Zurich with 14 minutes.

The survey, entitled "Prices and Earnings" and conducted in the first quarter of 2003, said Oslo replaced Tokyo as the world's most expensive city since UBS last carried out the survey in 2000.

Tokyo regains no. 1 spot!!!1!!!!

Postby yanpa » Tue Feb 05, 2013 7:49 am

The Graundiad, and many other easily impressed media purveyors wrote:Sydney and Melbourne climb list of world's most expensive cities

Australian cities third and fifth in annual EIU cost of living index, and Tokyo reclaims top spot from Zurich

The cost of living the Australian dream has surged with Sydney and Melbourne among the five most expensive cities in the world, according to an annual survey.

Asia and Australasia account for 11 of the top 20 most expensive cities, Europe eight and South America one, the Economist Intelligence Unit's worldwide cost of living index showed. No North American cities featured in the top 20.

Tokyo reclaimed the title as the world's most expensive city. Last year currency swings pushed Zurich to top spot, but government exchange rate controls relegated it to seventh this time. Osaka was ranked the second most expensive.

So, how is life in the dripping bunker at the arse end of the Nagoya area?

Edited to add: actually that's not fair, somewhere like Yokkaichi is a better match for the arse end of the Nagoya area

16°C !?!?
That's t-shirt and shorts weather!

Make a note to never even think about living anywhere north of Chiba.

Or south for that matter. My room has been 12°C a few times this winter, and I've seen colder previous winters. Yay nangoku!
