Bullet train on Akita Shinkansen Line derails; no injuries reported
Kyodo via Japan Times, March 3, 2013
A bullet train derailed Saturday afternoon on the Akita Shinkansen Line, halting all services on part of the route but avoiding injury to the approximately 130 passengers onboard, operator East Japan Railway Co. reported.

The first of the train's six cars derailed around 4:05 p.m. after its driver heard an abnormal noise on a snowy stretch of track in Daisen, Akita Prefecture, and brought it to a sudden stop, JR East said.

All services on the Akita Shinkansen Line between Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, and Akita have been suspended, the operator announced.

The accident occurred between Jinguji and Kariwano stations on a branch line that shares a regular track with other trains in northeastern Japan. A heavy snow warning had been issued in the area at the time of the derailment, according to a local observatory.

(Full Story)

I've always wondered just how safe those so-called "Shinkansen" on narrow gauge tracks were...

I didn't think shinkansen (1435mm axle) could ride on regular j track (1m?)....

In europe in the 50' there was speedy axle swaps at the frontier... but here ? axles have 4 wheels each ? or the track are in fact shared with 3 rails, 2 -1m appart and a 3rd one 1435mm from the first one ? it was common in the moutain regions to allow local and nationnal trains on same stations...

Hey Mulder, do you think a Shinkansen was also behind 9/11 ?

He wrote "auspicious", not "suspicious".

I do however note that no-one has ever been able to explain the JNR decals visible on the side of the first plane.

IIRC from my railpass days, there was a mixture of dual tracks (one standard gauge and one narrow gauge) and dual gauge.

There are no links. They've done well at keeping the lid on that one.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to send along a drone to kill you.
