Damnit! You guys have been slacking!

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Sep 12, 2013 12:12 pm

August beer shipments fall 2.8%, hit 21-year low
Gomiuri -- Sept 12, 2013
...
Beer shipments fell 6 percent to 20.7 million cases. Sales to households and restaurants were sluggish due to the bad weather.
Shipments of so-called third-segment beerlike beverages, which have little or no malt content and, therefore, are cheaper than other beer products, grew 3.2 percent... more...

Partially my fault, I admit. I have been on more of a shochu binge lately. But I think these folks may be a bit more tied to the downturn. Taro, you were prescient when you posted about this!

Can't stand their hoposhu. What's worse is that my japanese counterparts all think DRY is the best ... gag. Sorry I come from a family of home brewers. Swill is swill, Beer is Beer.

Get back to me when home brewers learn how to make a decent lager.

I hear ya, The japanese brewers can get back to me when they figure that little trick out as well.

I pretty much stick to making mead. Its a hell of a lot easier, No wort to mess around with no bottle capping etc. The folks back home send me a few gallons of honey every year from the family apiary so I usually have a batch going every few weeks.

Presumably because the malt content is low enough to meet the regulations on happoshu, and it can benefit from the lower tax. Just in the same way that some Smart cars were manufactured to fall within the keijidosha regulations, it seems that Nippon Beer gets "beer" manufactured in Belgium to meet the happoshu limits.

Where does it say in the rules that the benefit of that lower tax must be passed on to the consumers? Or alternatively, just imagine what it would cost you if it had the higher tax rate! Bottom line, if you like the product for the price, great, if you don't, buy something else.

One of the great things about not being a teenager anymore is not having to fit in with my peer group. If I agree with certain politics, and disagree with others, fine. If I have certain spiritual beliefs, and do not have others, fine. If I like certain alcoholic beverages, and dislike others, fine. I don't have to change my views because of what someone else tells me, and I also have no right trying to force someone else to agree with me.

I think home brewers can make great lager if they are serious beer geeks with good sanitation and tools and/or live in the right climate. The most fool-proof thing to do is to make a refrigerated fermentation chamber with a PID controller to keep it at lagering temp, though that does require a fair bit of doing. If you lived in Tohoku or Hokkaido and had a basement, would also be very doable.

Can anyone tell me what the 秋 is in 秋和?

Apart from the pretty can I'm having difficulty with a beer that tastes like autumn, tried drinking several cans and I still don't get it.

Usually I drink Sapporo just because that dick from Steel Partners said it was a poorly run company, like they were such experts on the economy they invested in a wig maker just before Lehman went bust, maybe they foresaw the financial crisis and knew we were all in for severe haircuts. So I drink Sapporo to remind me foreigners generally talk a lot and say shit.

Maybe there is something in that autumn flavour beer after all.

I drink Sapporo because if I don't the inlaws will disown me. Seriously though, Sapporo is ok. Orion is better. Haven't tried many of the micro brews yet. The only thing good about Asahi is it comes in liters with handles.

Are there no good Japanese Ales?

Hahaha, I actually like that stuff but I pretty much limit myself to Kirin and Yebisu when it comes to Japanese beers.

Yeah, that shit is nasty to begin with, the name just makes it worse!

Nodo goshi sounds more like what I want to do to a lemur than what I want "beer" to do when I drink it.
