Bring your own body bag please...

An as yet unexplained Shinjuku mass fainting event which saw a large number of young women collapse and lose consciousness has bemused both authorities and the online masses.

I thought there was no mystery and that these girls of the "Tennis Circle" were in sort of drinking contest.
Over 10 Girls from Meiji Uni. Drinking Circle found in alcoholic coma state on the street

Fuuko
They were girls from the university's Tennis Club who had been having a nomikai (drinking party). The title is slightly misleading.
Sanngetall
To be honest, majority of tennis circles in Japanese universities are drinking circles. This one was a Meiji University/Nihon Joshi University joint circle, which pretty much is a giant flashing sign saying "90% drinking 10% tennis".
serados
Tennis circles in Japanese universities aren't usually known for actually playing tennis...

So, that was just a really poorly executed gang rape attempt...

Also... the BigT seems too really do it wrong, because all the tennis club from highschool to med school to now the hospital never included boozing... and me Julie was in everyone of them...

Got to love how the police just stand there and let them sleep off their alcohol coma in the street. Makes one wonder if anyone has ever died of alchohol poisoning while some J-cop is just standing over them in the street.

Yeah, a much better solution would be to arrest all of them like they would in the US. Anyway, you're assuming an ambulance isn't on the way.

Amba-lamps is what I was getting at...and while I know they're suuuper slow here, how many times have you seen the kyukyusha called when someone passes out in the street?

Yes, the whole public intoxication mentality in the US is indeed fucked but out of all the buddies I know who have drank themselves under, none have never been arrested. Just woke up in a hospital with a hefty bill to pay. (I think, in practice, the cops would usually rather not deal with drunks unless they're being violent or causing a scene)

And to be fair they have been placed in the recovery position. The cop is keeping an eye on them. I think that's about right. Calling an ambulance would be excessive unless their breathing was very shallow or there was another reason for concern. Maybe call their parents and ask them to come and fetch but not an ambulance.

You really want the J-police making that call? Better to error on the safe side.

Especially when a whole group is passed out like that. In a case like that I'd be worried that they had been drugged (or purposely took some drugs that they couldn't handle).

I can't remember if I've posted this story on here before or not but about 12 years ago my friends and I saw a girl pass out cold in the street from drinking too much. She was completely unresponsive to her friends so one of us called 119. An ambulance and a firetruck showed up and the drivers got into fight over jurisdiction and started shoving each other. We all just stood there like ....

So.....was she really that hot?

BTW, anyone know WTF happened on Saturday in Shinjuku? I was walking under the bridge in front of PePe/Seibu Shinjuku Station and there was a huge group of police....suddenly a firetruck pulled up and they stretched out a hose, while idiots walked right over it. Bunch of commotion but I wasn't going to stick around so walked on by.

Cops have any medical training ? don't think sooo...

And they are not even wearing facemasks, in case of bio/chemical attack they'd be dead meat... At least they have gloves...

(or am I the only one thinking 'group fainting' -> ermugerd terrurism... It's one thing to pretend to believe that it's reasonable to blow up half of the desert because AlQu4ed4 might be weaponizing goats, but toats another not having a little worry when people drop on the ground for no apparent reason, in a country growing its own array of nutcase, despite the lack of goats...)

My guess is that one of the male members of the Meiji University 'Kreis' Tennis Club had the 'brilliant' idea of slipping a drug like baclofen or phenibut into their drinks in the hopes of making them more compliant. Both can cause people to pass out especially when mixed with alcohol but both also have anti-spasmodic properties -- which would help explain how and why the girls also ended up shitting themselves. Since baclofen's half life is only around 3 hours. if the cops haven't taken samples for testing, they may never know for sure (unless they opt for the tried and true method of abusing suspects through prolonged detention.)

If more than one of them actually soiled themselves, that's really suspicious. However, drinking till a bunch of them passed out isn't that unusual in that particular spot in Kabukicho. There are a couple of notorious 1000 yen nomihodai places there that are regularly packed with students from Meidai and Waseda. I went to one years ago and I've never seen that many people that drunk and out of control anywhere ever. People were passed out on the floor, a potted tree was lying on it's side, the men's room was covered in vomit, and the ladies' room floor was flooded several inches deep from an overflowing toilet. I know because the door was left wide open and several girls were walking barefoot through the water so it caught my attention. I asked one of them where her shoes were and she just said, "I don't know." Good times and at least nobody got glassed.

Demon Worship and Passing out: The hottest Japanese trend!~

26 Fukuoka schoolgirls fall ill; panic attack suspected
The Japan Times | July 1, 2014
FUKUOKA –
Twenty-six students at a girls-only high school in Fukuoka Prefecture became sick in succession Monday in an apparent panic attack, prompting the school to close for the day, it has been learned.
It was not immediately clear what caused the students’ sickness.
According to the private Yanagawa High School in the city of Yanagawa, at about 10 a.m. on Monday, a female student in the first grade suddenly shrieked in the middle of a class and fell down. Two other students in the class fell into a similar state soon afterward, followed by students from other classes who came to check on the incident. Some of the students turned pale, though the exact cause of their sickness was not known.
...rumors of the students “becoming possessed with evil spirits,” the regional daily Nishinippon Shimbun reported Tuesday. The students got well soon afterward and they are fine now, according to the paper.
Psychiatrist Rika Kayama said that students in adolescence can feel excessive tensions and anxieties, which are highly contagious, adding that group panic attacks might have been triggered by occultism.

The only thing you can do (to avoid the recurrence of such incidents) is to distance yourself from people and topics that triggered such incidents. Rumors spread quickly in today’s society, through Twitter and other means, making them more prone to panic attacks.”
