Alien plants believed to have been unwittingly transported by tourists to Mount Fuji are threatening to destroy or damage the ecosystem of the nation’s newest World Heritage site and even its landscape, researchers say.
In a recent study of plants along the Fuji Subaru Line toll road, which winds 2,300 meters up to the fifth station and nearby trekking trails, researchers found 56 foreign species likely brought in from elsewhere...
... a nonprofit organization called Fujisan Club -- working with the governments of Yamanashi Prefecture and the town of Fujikawaguchiko -- has been extricating bur cucumbers from Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes.
Bur cucumbers, which are native to North America, are fast growers that climb and engulf plants around them, often strangling them. In mid-August, the club launched its fifth campaign of the year to exterminate the species.
A total of 15 members and volunteers looked for the plants’ roots by the lake and pulled them up. In about two hours they had collected enough bur cucumbers to fill 20 45-liter plastic bags.

High mercury level detected on Mt. Fuji

Mercury concentrations higher than the national average have been detected at the peak of Mt. Fuji, which might be caused by cross-border pollution from China, a research group has announced.
The group, which includes Prof. Osamu Nagafuchi at the University of Shiga Prefecture, measured 2.8 nanograms of mercury per cubic meter of air at the summit of Mt. Fuji in August, and a record 25.1 nanograms in 2007. The Environment Ministry will begin a fixed-point observation project in the Asia-Pacific region jointly with the United States, Vietnam and other nations next year.
Though the observed figures are not at a level harmful to humans, they exceeded the average around the mountain peak, which is almost completely free from factory pollutants.
“When analyzing the situation, including weather conditions, the reason seems to be contaminated air flowing over from China,” said Nagafuchi, an expert in environmental science.
According to the Environment Ministry, the average figure at all 261 observation points in the nation was 2.1 nanograms in fiscal 2011. A guideline of the Air Pollution Control Law stipulates the yearly average should be 40 nanograms or lower to prevent health problems.

According to what happened with Elliökÿordaåškùllfück eruption in iceland last time, the safest airspace are near the volcano on the side against the wind all the plume flying the other way. According to usual wind patterns that would be any airport south/south west of Fuji. Anyone east/northeast better have an electric car...
