Beijing Seizes Japan Textbooks for Content

Postby mercutio » Wed Jun 29, 2005 4:31 am

they're at it again...

BEIJING - Textbooks headed for a Japanese school in China were seized by customs officials who objected to the way maps in the books depicted the Chinese mainland and rival Taiwan, an official said Tuesday.

The maps showed the mainland and the island in different colors, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao, indicating that Beijing was concerned this might make Taiwan seem like a separate country.

Clearly, what we need now is for Ishihara to touch down at the school in his helicopter and wave his mighty flag until the Chinese acknowledge the good sense of the right wing position.

Hey, I wonder what would happen if China wrote Japan's textbooks for them. They'd probably rewrite them so that they're all about China or something.

oh well, these east asians have always got to nit-pick over something not even very important, but dang it, everything little thing seems to offend them in some way. They should all take a chill-pill

Textbooks caused me damage!!

Postby ichigo partygirl » Tue Jul 26, 2005 3:01 pm

TOKYO - A group of Koreans and Chinese filed a lawsuit Friday seeking to force a state government to ban new textbooks they say gloss over Japan's militaristic past, a Japanese news agency reported.

The 577 plaintiffs also demanded $9 each for alleged psychological suffering caused by the publication of textbooks that glorify Japan's aggression in Asia in the 1930s and 1940s, Kyodo News agency said.
Japan's Education Ministry approved new editions of the history and civics textbooks in April, drawing furious protests from China and South Korea.

Critics say the books downplay Japanese military atrocities - such as using Asian women as sexual slaves for troops in Asia and massacring civilians in Nanking, China - in the 1930s and 40s. The new textbooks do not mention sexual slavery, and relegate the Nanking killings to a footnote.

Japan also colonized the Korean Peninsula in 1910-45.

Many of Japan's 580 school districts are currently choosing which textbooks to use for the 2006 school year. It was not immediately clear how many would adopt the two controversial books, which were prepared by nationalist scholars.

In their lawsuit, the plaintiffs also claimed the book's publisher, Fusosha Ltd., showed textbook samples to school officials before ministry approval, allegedly violating fair trade and education laws, Kyodo said.

"Fusosha textbooks aim to spread militarism and nationalism - a threat to peace in east Asia," plaintiff Kim Chung-sook said, according to the report.

Several schools in Ehime chose the original edition of the textbooks. It was not immediately clear why the plaintiffs sued the Ehime government.

Because the schools are in which the text was approved were state run schools and therefore the decision tio use the textbooks was made by the perfectural government.

TEXTBOOK DISCRIMINATION against the differently abled!

Japan's education ministry (MEXT) discriminates against 3-handed girls and recalls 10,000 textbooks!
