I'm no wine expert but I thought that thick skinned grapes they can grow here were terrible for wine?

I am being unfair using that above picture of a typical Japanese grape. Originally Japanese wine was disastrously made with the local varieties of huge eating grapes.

In recent years, "serious" Japanese wineries have adapted Japanese varieties crossbred with foreign grapes to grow more suitable grape for wine as shown in this CNN report about kosho wine grapes.

I've actually had some decent Japanese wine in recent years. It used to be unbelievably bad.

Even my sommelier friend will drink some of the better wines from Yamanashi.
