Raccoon Eradication

Postby Mulboyne » Sun May 07, 2006 12:12 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Xinhua: Japan's local govt plans to exterminate 4,000 raccoons
A central prefecture of Japan plans to exterminate all 4,000 raccoons thought to be living in the region to avoid damage to agriculture...Kanagawa prefecture, to the south of Tokyo, would carry out the plan in five years. The plan is thought to be in line with the Japanese law that prevents damage from alien species. According to Kyodo, similar plans have been approved by Japan's environment ministry. The number of raccoons caught in the prefecture surged from four to some 1,000 from fiscal year 1995 to fiscal year 2005, local officials said, most of the mammals have become wild after being kept as pets. The animals have caused an estimated damage of over 15 million yen to agricultural produce and others in fiscal 2005, officials said. Some local residents and experts have voiced opposition to the trapping and killing of raccoons which the plan called for, in terms of animal protection and its questionable effect.

Since the article talks about "alien species", it seems likely that these are actually raccoons rather than tanuki.

Raccoons breed because cities with poor garbage deposal are a raccoons best friend. The 15 million yen crop damage estimate sounds full of shit. How do they know raccoon are responsible and not say drunken salarymen falling into tambos?

Personnally, I think raccoons are the pest that Japan deserves- everyone thinks they are cute and cuddly and they eat garbage. Plus, they compliment the 'beautiful nature' here which includes rats, pigeons, crows, and feral dogs and cats.

Not sure I know of too many countries that don't have the four animals you mentioned. I think boothe has been taking care of the dog problem though, never see ferals. :domo:

She's messing around with some raccoons....

Pesky little critters...

Commercial repellents will stop raccoons. There are several online vendors of repellents, who claim that spraying their product on garbage cans and around yards will deter raccoons. Wolf urine is common, and has been recommended by wildlife specialists for quite some time.

Wolf Urine?

Why not just re-introduce the Japanese wolf?
It will solve a lot of problems; racoons, stray cats and dogs, old people, noisy school kids outside my window in thw morning, drunks late at night...

Ahhh, any chance we could eliminate the reference to "drunks late at night..." from the above wish list?

That photo looks like a "raccoon" to me, meaning the animal that we in North America call a raccoon. But the photo didn't come from the news story, right? So...is this what they are actually exterminating from Japan and if so, how did they get there in the first place? Or are they exterminating Tanuki or Arai Guma? (I know for a fact there are plenty of tanuki in kanagawa because I used to see them there myself).

We have raccoons in our yard here on the northern california coast, and since Japanese is our home language, we just sort of randomly call them tanuki, arai guma, or rakuun. So I got curious to see how closely related these animals with similar face markings and body size actually are, and it turns out they are all from totally different families. There are only like 15 families in the carnivora order but the raccoon, the tanuki, the arai guma, and the red panda "lesser panda" (レッサーパンダ) all have the same basic body size and face markings but are each distinct families.

In case someone out there cares to know, I'll save you the google search by posting my findings here.

A raccoon is of the Procyonidae family, which is, uh, raccoons.

A tanuki is of the Canidae family, you know, dogs, foxes, etc.

An arai guma (euroasian badger) is of the Mustelidae family with otters, wolverines, weasels and the like. Though it seems to me many Japanese people use the term "arai guma" to mean the north american raccoon as well.

Raccoons it is!
You know the story here. People just love exotic pets, at least until they get a little too big or troublesome then it's off to the local forest with them.

Since the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it has been illegal to release the species except where already established. Reeves's muntjac colonies exist throughout England south of Derbyshire, and the population continues to grow. In Ireland, the first sightings of muntjac in 2008 caused the Government, concerned at the risk of the species becoming established, to quickly introduce an all year round hunting season.

It is worse than eating old goat - tough, stringy, and not much there. I suppose they could be used for feeding sharks, if only there were a way to catch them. (Come to think about it - they are quite similar to cats....)
