EMS Rates Increasing from June

Postby FG Lurker » Fri Jan 29, 2016 4:20 pm

Got a call from our EMS rep earlier today, rates are going up from June and the lowest weight class (300g) is being eliminated. New prices haven't been announced yet but the increase is expected to be 300yen to 500yen per weight class.

I asked our rep "why now" when the price of oil is so low.

Apparently the weak yen has boosted exports and lowered imports (via the postal system). This has resulted in Japan Post having to make compensation payments for the package imbalance to (some?) overseas postal systems. Combine this with the weak yen and it has resulted in the first EMS rate increase in about 20 years.

Could be BS but he's always been straight with us before, and called yesterday morning to let me know that it was going to be announced later in the day.
