The population of non-Japanese living in Japan grew to a new high of over 2.23 million in 2015, boosted by a 15% increase in both foreign students and participants in a government technical trainee program.
According to Ministry of Justice figures, there were over 2.23 million non-Japanese residents in Japan in 2015, an increase of 5.2% from the previous year and the largest tally since the ministry began keeping records in 1959.

Or making a virtue of necessity. Japanese companies don't need to export nearly as many staff as they used to. Local hires, either resident Japanese (and there are lots these days in places like the UK, and they are very good) or just the general workforce are better and cheaper. Why spend a fortune transplanting some near helpless, clueless drone from Tokyo? They can't really afford it anyway these days.

So, it's very unlikely Tacky will get an expat posting whether he wants one or not.

Anyways, even allowing for the death of the relative in reporting, despite not pointing out that what might seem a rather large increase when viewed in absolute numbers by those easily befogged by same it turns out that Japan's now booming foreign population is pushing 1.784% of the TOTAL POPULATION!!!!!!!!!!!!, though judging by the chart at the bottom of The Kommissar's linked article, about 1/5 of that is actually foreigners born and raised in Japan "foreigners". OOOkkkk If only there were a way for the MOJ to distinguish between foreign foreigners and native born foreigners. Perhaps they could institute a birth registration and identity card system that could be used to track the latter, and could then also be used to account for this seemingly counter-intuitive decline in the number of foreigners coming from the 2 countries that constitute the majority of the native born foreigners. This could also provide a new opportunity to hire foreign arithmetic experts that could then teach the Japanese how to build a basic demographic statistic database, and they could also teach Japanese about math, which remains the achilles heel of Asian education, as we know.

But I think they balanced it by ending with a photo of two white ESL clowns instead of a sweating, underfed Asian apprentice.
