In a move that should set Taro's heart aflutter, Unesco is set honor an ugly grey concrete monstrosity which look like it might be an cult headquarters or perhaps an abandoned industrial site.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has decided to recommend the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo’s Ueno Park and other buildings designed by Le Corbusier as sites to be included in UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage list.

ICOMOS in Paris notified the Japanese government of its decision on Tuesday.

The museum’s main building was designed by Le Corbusier, a master of modern architecture who was based in Paris. The museum opened in 1959.

This might be a Fonzie moment for Japanese WHS (my former specialty, FYI). They have diluted and now just plain cheapened the brand so fast and so deep they really do need to take a breather and reevaluate their criteria. It is getting to be like a comic satire of Soviet/Red Chinese propaganda releases.

japanese have a strong obsession with modern concrete architect. and its a correct direction for japan. conversely i really hate traditional types which cannot help but remind me of disgusting the continent and the peninsula. just burn out kyoto, nara and kamakura.
you will browse Pinterest and find that over the half of "less is more" type of concrete private homes listed there are japanese ones.
(i too have a plan to build the 極小住宅 version of it.)

Nothing wrong with concrete if used with taste....unfortunately, most of the concrete we see here is moldy, stained boxes with no sense.

Take's love of concrete shouldn't surpise anyone. In my time in Japan, I have rarely known a Japanese who prefers trees to concrete.
As for Le Corbusier, I found this about our producer of hertiage.

there are still many 木の温もり(tree warmth) lovers here, though, as long as i know.
well, actually i suffered Asperger in my childhood, who was cruel, arrogant like a little devil and insensible to almost all of my classmates hating me. but already overcame it by reading many books, mainly philosophy ones in my middle 20s. no worries.
