Ever since it has been drawn to my attention that the word helicopter is comprised of helico -- spiral, think helix -- and pter -- wing, think pterodactyl, I have had a fingernails on blackboard (showing my age there!) sensation each time I see either heli or copter.

Don't the different brances of the US armed forces call them whirlybirds by different names? AF uses helicopter, army uses chopper, navy uses helo, and marines point and grunt excitedly like chimps.
