In the Aug. 30 Light Gist column, headlined "Mascots on a mission to explain the mundane", Colin P. A. Jones explored the marvellous menagerie of mascots deployed by Japanese authorities to educate adults and children alike about the law and the workings of government.

Please drop us a line with your ideas for mascots to represent any branch of the Japanese bureaucracy, national or local. Alternatively, create one yourself and send in a JPEG file of your idea. If we decide to publish your illustration, contributors will be paid 5,000 Yen.

The top visual and written submissions will be published and/or interpreted by artist Chris Mackenzie alongside the Sept. 27 Light Gist column. Send your ideas to community@japantimes.co.jp by by 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23.

I'm shite with pictures, but the image Japan conveys to me is as follows:

-- A decrepit sumo wrestler (surreptitiously getting a handout from organized crime)...
...with his head buried in the sand...
...raising his g-string clad arse into the air...
...and being sodomized by Mother Nature...
...while they all glow in the dark due to Fukushima radiation and admonish their neighbors -- contaminated to the extent they resemble the subject of a painting by Dali or Munch -- for not separating their garbage properly!

I guess it'd end up looking something like Nara prefecture's mascot that is some sort of cross between a Buddhist priest, incubus and one of Greji's kids (and I don't mean human children in the latter case).
