The big merger of FamilyMart and Uny convenience store chains (japantimes.com)
has created a fuckedgaijin kind of store: FuckU-mart

Scratching my head why they didn't call this chain UF...

With all mergers and takeovers, there is an inordinate amount of time spent making sure that neither party is perceived to be dominant beyond what could be said to be balanced. It is kind of a face saving. See here where the name is a different order to the logo and web domain. Note also that we are working with a level of nativeness of English that views HD as an appropriate abbreviation for Holdings.

Note also that while this is the branding for the parent company, I don't think there are any plans to abandon the value of their current retail brands. While some branches may change, for example, from Sunkus to FamilyMart, I don't think they will any retail stores with the holding company name, any more than you see Seven&i shops anywhere.

I always thought the "Sunkus" transliteration of サンクス was just a weird J-style version of "thanks."
It turns out there is a little more to the name...
From the English wiki:
The word "Sunkus" is a combination of the words "Sun" and the word "Thanks", The logo is a combination of the words "Sun", "Kids", and "Us".

And now you know.

Yes, it's very common for the names to be revered in English and Japanese when there's a merger. You see it all the time with the banks. 三井住友銀行 is Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). Personally I think it's stupid because it causes unnecessary confusion when going from one language to another but whatever.

You may not see Seven&i Holdings stores but 7-11, Denny's, Ito-Yokado, etc. generally have a Seven&i Holdings logo prominently displayed on the front of their stores so we may get to see FU's popping up all over the place. At least in Japan.

The truth is more bizarre than the hype....I always heard from several locals it originated in san-ku, so sankus?

Hence the survival of the standalone Nissan brand instead of more logical -Nissan Groupe Renault- , -Renault Nissan- or just Renault.
Same goes for Mack trucks who should be Renault-Mack, Renault Vehicules Industriels Mack or Renault Volvo Mack.

:( A moment of silence please...

It's being reported all over the Net this morning that the fun FU logo has been removed from the FamilyMart UNY Holdings website.

FU-logo-is-RIP.jpg

Of course the FU logo could just be like Fukuppy who just was sent into witness-protection for only eight weeks only to triumphantly return to his job of representing the spirit of Fukushima for past three years now.

Too bad, I was looking forward to the day I we could see the FU mart, getting robbed by a new haafu, on the VTR of BS news.
