The other interesting data is that in 2000, those without partners were looking for them, whereas in the 2015 data, fewer are on the search (although see caveat below about that).

If we massage the data into "those with a partner or seeking a partner" and "those who don't give a fuck that they don't get a fuck" we have:

Indeed, family dynamics fuck people up. You have cases like my boss's son who married his cousin...I introduced him to girls in Tokyo but then he was sent to Kansai for work. He had zero friends there and his younger female cousin thought his line of work was kakkoii and started following him around. Mind you, his father was against it from the start, but the cousin's father "dislikes" his own son and was very fond of his nephew. The guy's parents are much more loving than most families I've seen, and the kid is a real decent guy in all other respects...but there is definitely some weird fucked insular family shit going on because I remember the family joking about how he wasn't mazakon but shisutakon...shared family bathing into their early 20's.....and then with the uncle basically replacing his own son with his nephew. I won't even dare venture what kind of issues this may cause for the children. (or maybe not, seeing as how many families her tend to not associate with anyone outside their immediate family, save for weddings and funerals)

People, regardless of culture or sex, tend to get set in their ways while living alone....making it harder to compromise lifetstyle/living arrangements with a partner. (the mendokusai effect?)

By the numbers the most common international marriages in Japan are between Japanese males and SE Asian females. A lot of these are farmers. I guess the young women from the countryside head off to the big city while the guys tend the farm, so they find themselves a nice sturdy cheerful woman who doesn't mind tugging the daikon and riding in a kei truck.
