Sadly these types of attitudes exist in the world.. be it hate speech against gender, race, sexuality or religion. IMHO the best way to handle the ignorant among us is not to hide from such attitudes or sanitize them but to allow the rest of the board to debate the issues and hopefully through peer pressure the idiot is either shamed into playing nicely or they take their bat and ball and go elsewhere. Maybe due to this debate Jack will think twice about voicing such an opinion again or perhaps he has seen that this type of attitude is wrong and he can improve himself.. sure that is all a bit pollyanna but who knows what goes on in his tiny mind.

The same goes for racist speech - usually it is the board members that tell other board members when they have crossed a line and hopefully that the debate allows/encourages people to re-evaluate their positions and think for a change rather than just sprout rhetoric.

For me, I hope that when I say something silly or ignorant, that the forum will show me the "error of my ways" and I can learn.. We are all adults here and adults should be self-regulating.. That is just my opinion.

That said, free speech does have its limits beyond the unsavoury.. there is some moderation that does occur when those limits are reached.

Phuket Gazette: Japanese tourist raped

Police yesterday charged a parasail boat employee at Patong Beach for the rape of a Japanese tourist. The rape was reported to Pol Capt Padungpong Dooksookkaew at Kathu Police Station at 1 am yesterday. The victim, a 24-year-old woman from Japan, told police that she was staying at a hotel on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd. While sunbathing at Patong Beach, she met a parasail boat employee who agreed to take her nightclubbing in Phuket City. Later, after he picked her up on his motorbike, the man said he had forgotten something at home. When they reached his room, in a house for parasail staff on 50 Pi Rd, he forced himself upon her, police said. After he let her go, the woman hired a motorbike taxi and reported the crime to the police. She was taken to Patong Hospital, where doctors confirmed she had been raped.

The rapist was identified as Somchai Thongyoo, 30, from Ao Luk District in Krabi. Arrested at his home by a team of Kathu Police led by Pol Maj Serm Kwannimit, Somchai initially denied all charges. He confessed only after the victim picked him out of a police line-up, police said. In his confession, Somchai said that he was attracted to the victim. Given that she had agreed to go out with him in Phuket City, he thought the feeling was mutual. However, after she resisted his advances he decided to rape her as he thought that she would not report the incident to the police. Somchai was charged with raping a woman not his wife.

Japanese tourist alleges rape, withdraws charge


In an intriguing turn of events, a Japanese on Monday complained to the police of her rape in a hotel by its staff but withdrew the charge within hours saying the term 'rape' was used for use of force for taking away her mobile phone and not for sexual assault.
The 35-year-old tourist, who was staying at a Tonk Road hotel, had registered a complaint with the police alleging she was raped by the employees of the hotel last night, Superintendent of Police, Jaipur, VK Singh said.
On the basis of the complaint made by her, a case had been registered at Baja Nagar police station, he added.
However, the lady has refused to undergo medical examination which is a must in order to check the authencity of the rape complaint, Singh said.
Later, Vidhya Praksah, Station House Officer of Bajaj Nagar police station, showing another application given by the Japanese after her alleged rape complaint, said the woman says "I don't want to move forward with this case and don't want any medical examination because the word rape used by me in the complaint is meant as application of force for taking away my mobile phone not for sexual intercourse".
It was simply a matter of theft by applying force, she said in the application.
"The tourist also requested the police to close the case in her application written to us", Prakash said.
Police arrested a security guard of the hotel, where the Japanese woman had been staying, this evening but Prakash said "there is no case of rape against Dashrath Singh who was arrested for snatching the mobile phone of the tourist as the phone was recorded from his possession".
The Japanese has been sent to a magistrate to record her statements related to the case and details of all what she had said earlier.

Actually, I can see how this may have just been a mistranslation by her and/or someone trying to help her (granted it was an error with very serious consequences), as the Japanese have a lot of words for various injustices like: bouryoku, goutou, settou, suri, bakuru, kapparau, hittakuru, sagi, kyoukatsu, manbiki, ubau . . . and I'm sure there's more. However, none of those seem likey to be mistranslated to "rape". "Physical violence", perhaps, but not "rape".

I'd like to know what the original Japanese word was she used.

Unless she actively deceived them, the story suggests a serious flaw in the early investigation if they couldn't identify such a fundamental error at the start.
