Japan PM pays respects to war dead

Japan PM pays respects to war dead
CNN.com, May 30, 2005
Japan's prime minister has paid his respects at the country's tomb of the unknown soldier, laying flowers at a secular memorial that many point to as an alternative to the nearby Shinto war shrine opposed by China.

Under heavy rain, Junichiro Koizumi bowed deeply at the Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery, where the remains of unknown victims of World War II are honored.

[...]

"Those who died in the war are the foundation of peace and prosperity of our country today, and offer our heartfelt condolences to them," said Health Minister Hidehisa Otsuji.

(Full Story)

Did this get any coverage in the Japanese media? It happened 4 days ago and this is the first I've heard of it... Odd.

The part about the "war shrine" is pretty funny! Not very subtle, but funny.

Sixty years after the end of World War II, a group of Chinese Americans in the Silicon Valley are helping organize an international movement that seeks to hold Japan accountable for atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers throughout Asia.

During the "Rape of Nanking" of 1937-38, Japanese troops are believed to have slaughtered thousands in the former Chinese capital. Civilians were reportedly raped, used for bayonet practice and killing contests, burned and buried alive, used for biological experiments, and otherwise tortured and killed.

The Chinese government estimates that 35 million people died in China alone as a result of Japan's occupation from 1931 to 1945, Ding said.

Not to take away from the evils of occupation but someone just pulled that 35 mil figure out of their ass.

Well, if you consider that the Japanese invasion allowed Mao's men to get a foothold in Manchuria (IIRC), which later led to the PRC taking control of all China, putting a man with a substantial number of mental problems in control of a billion souls. Mao's policies cost millions their lives, yet he still graces their currency.

Yeah, I thought of that. One thing leads to another. Which makes me think of Japan's occupation of Korea-----> Lil Kim massive famine. Also, America's bombing campaign in Cambodia------>Khmer Rouge. When one country fucks with another country they do need to take responsibility for the outcome. Or at least should. But that quote is talking from 31-45. Mao took over the communist party in 45 and didn't start the mass murdering chaos insanity famine madness until The Great Leap Forward/Cultural Revolution eras much later. So, that guy pulled that 35 mil figure out of his ass-- don't you think? History is nasty enough without making shit up!

Mainichi: Prince Mikasa made war apology to China in 1998
Japanese Prince Mikasa, a younger brother of the late Emperor Hirohito, expressed his deep remorse over Japan's wartime atrocities when he met with then Chinese president Jian Zemin during his stay in Japan in 1998, a recently published Chinese official document has revealed. During a banquet held at the Imperial Palace, the prince approached Jiang and expressed his wish to apologize to the Chinese people, according to a document on Jiang's overseas travels published at the end of July. The prince, now 90 years old, was stationed in Nanjing as a Japanese Imperial Army officer in 1943 and 1944. The city was the site of the 1937 massacre carried out by Japanese troops. The Chinese document quoted the prince as saying he saw with his own eyes atrocities committed in Nanjing by Japanese military officers. The prince was also quoted as saying, "My conscience still pricks me. I hope to apologize to the Chinese people"...more...

It ain't in the what, it's in the who

Seattle Times: Japan's endless apology
Tom's being a little disingenous here. Even average Japanese regard Murayama as an anomaly Prime Minister. If the Emperor or LDP leader made a similar statement then Asia might take it seriously but no-one believes that Murayama was speaking for either the majority of public opinion or major vested interests.

It doesn't matter what the head of government says.

What the victim states demand, and have demanded all along, is a state apology.

I find a lot of Americans do not understand this key distinction. Easy and fun as it is to make Stoopid Mrkan jokes, I think it relates to the relative lack of such a distinction in the American political stucture.

If it ain't the Emperor saying

Aki-chama wrote:We Apologise

then it doesn't count. "Regret" doesn't cut it, nor does "Oops!"

Having siad that, the Chinese state is a despicable collection of whining, thuggish scum. It would be nice to see Japan and Korea get over it, though. They make nice kimuchi.

That statement speaks tons about the problem and the arguments! If the word of the heads of government, or the government itself cannot be accepted, then what can be? It would appear that the news media wants to decide on behalf of all the bereaved governments of the world, what is, or is not, acceptable from Japan.
