Machine Gun vs. Katana

Image

Pointless but amusing super-slow-motion video of a katana cutting 50mm machine gun bullets in half.

Warning: horrible .WMV format, which isn't quite so horrible on MacOS X now that I have the wonderful Flip4Mac WMV QuickTime codec.

Poor katana never had a chance....

Still, you have to remember what James Earl Jones said in Conan The Barbarian regarding the Mystery of Steel. What is steel compared to the hand that wields it ? Katana or machine gun, a weapon's only as good as the skills of it's user.

I saw that on TV (trivia no izumi) a while back and the original quality of those HS footages were crappy to begin with hence the shitty video quality.

.50 calibre not 50mm

Postby Grumblebum » Sat Aug 27, 2005 9:57 pm

The machine gun used in the video is an M2 .50 calibre machine gun. I'm not sure where Charles got the 50mm from (although the length of the projectiles fired from one of these is probably about that size..)

.50 calibre is 12.7mm which is the diameter of the projectile.

Hmm.. I guess I don't understand what units caliber is in. Caliber is inches? So a .50 cal is 1/2 inch in diameter?

Well, at least nobody can say this wasn't educational, I learned about calibers, and now I know the counter for gunshots (ippatsu, nihatsu, etc.) although I hope to never actually need to USE that particular counter in daily life.

Nice find, the katana definitely got owned in that showdown. It kind of reminds me of the final fight in Highlander, but there are huge differences in the katana and the European long sword. Where the katana is purely meant as a slash weapon and the long sword will no only slash but break some bones on contact, since during most battles fought in Europe and the Crusades chainmail and plate armor were commonly used and the need for a weapon that could deal a heavy and powerful blow was required, which is noticeable with the weight difference of 400 grams. In contrast to the battles of Japan, heavy armor was limited to the elite. Not sure how much of that was explained in the video, I don't speak German.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

This vid typically shows German arrogance. They can make everything without other people's help.
When katana is broken, it is broken without extention and never be bented.
That katana made by Deutch dude is a fake.

I think you pretty spot on about the swords Take, it was a definitely a poor sample of a katana that was used. That was probably probably caused by the cost in ruining a good katana, all for just proving a nebulous point that precluded any real test. The broadsword was built to do just that sort of thing to any armour or weaponry and hammering it down on a stationary fixed sword actually proves nothing. But I really didn't see it as arrogance in listening in my limited German, but I will bow to any real German speakers on the board to define the merits of that point.

I agree with you and Take that this video was probably euro-centric and could have sampled a better crafted katana. Of course, I am sure they were limited by the film budget and they could only grab a DonQuijote-like quality one on the fly.

Here is another katana vs. Long sword video on youtube by some back country rednecks. They gave the katana the edge time around though.:ninja2:

OLD.

The history channel has been running that one a lot recently. The katana is not japanese, it is one of those late night shopping channel ones you can pick up for $200.
