...Launched in 2000, the humanoid machine resembling a shrunken spaceman has become arguably Japan’s most famous robot, wheeled out to impress visiting politicians over the years. But Honda said Thursday it may scrap future generations of Asimo, now on its seventh iteration.
“We will still continue research into humanoid robots, but our future robots may not be named Asimo,” Honda spokesman Hajime Kaneko told AFP. The comment came after Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that the Japanese carmaker had terminated Asimo and dissolved the team making one of the world’s most famous humanoid robots.

Of course it doesn't matter who owns Boston Dynamics; the fact remains that their robotics technology is superior to that of Honda.

Btw, I think there are (at least) two problems with this type of robots: (1) they require relatively much energy to run, and (2) they are quite fragile, so they need a lot of maintenance.

Tech and concepts...I mean how many pointless/useless Japanese "robots" are there now? At least Boston Dynamics has designs/research with some practical applications. The Japanese ones tend to be all show and even then often fail spectacularly.

The Boston Dynamics ones are pretty damn durable and as battery tech progresses, they will become more feasible.

How do you know they are that durable? I cannot judge that from the videos.

Regarding battery tech, I think we can see some quite spectacular improvements in the coming decade, but the fact remains that wheels are more efficient (and durable) than legs.

There are a bunch of scenes in many of them kicking them, dropping them, etc. Opposed to most of the J-robots that seem to only perform under perfect conditions. (and still fuck up) Have you seen the latest version of spotmini?
