Is that out of 26?
I'm surprised they rank so highly.

What is really frustrating (at least to me) is when I do come across a japanese who has learned ingurish from someone from india or liberia or some other 3rd world backwater country... it doesn't happen too often but when it does I have to really strain to figure out what their getting across. I guess what ticks me off is that they probably paid good money to learn it too. I mean The Queens English would be far better...well besides everything sounding like the Magna Carta. (more than likely it's actually a good thing) Even their Ausi counterparts would be a superior alternative.

Before I pulled my kid out of school her "English" teacher was from I want to say jamaica or maybe haiti... Either way she kept arguing with him on pronunciation, intonation, emphasis or grammar... (hell her grammar is better than mine at this point)

Actually, I'll agree with J.A.F.O. about how bad Aussie Engrish is. I was gobsmacked by how learned the average Brit was when it came to the English language. I was pretty much blown away despite having a better command of the language than many. At my multinational postgrad school, when it came to Engrish studies, the Poms were eons ahead, Merkins far exceeded Aussies and we lagged a long way behind, with the younger the dumber being a general rule of thumb. I wish I could sound brag, but I was totally out of my depth.

What you don't know is that the so-called "EPI" consists of one question, namely "What is this?", and the questionioner is holding up a writing implement.

(The correct answer is of course "are nan deshita'kke... eigo mutsukashiii neee... komatta nyaa... nantoka jisu izu pen desu janakatta ka naa?").

Wearing those Plague Masks might not have been so helpful?

cool Illiteracy

Japanese middle schoolers average 12% on English speaking exam

down to 26th now down to 80th place

Asia has the widest differences in English proficiency levels. Singapore had the highest score among Asian countries, coming in at number 10 in the world. Yet several Central Asian countries were toward the bottom of the list. Their low rating, the report suggests, is partly because Russian is the second language that is most commonly taught in schools.
