JAXA Moonshot

Postby Mike Oxlong » Fri Jun 30, 2017 2:15 pm

Japan announces plans to put a man on the moon by 2030 as 'Asian space race' intensifies
•This is the first time Japan has announced intentions to explore the lunar surface
•The mission will most likely form part of an international collaboration
•The announcement means Japan is joining the intensifying 'Asian space race'
•China is also making 'preliminary' preparations for a manned lunar mission
•Earlier this month a space official said funding and approving will 'not take long'

Japan plans to put a man on the moon by 2030, according to a new proposal by the government's Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa).

It is the first time Jaxa has announced its intentions to explore the lunar surface, and will most likely form part of an international mission, the agency said.

Jaxa's plans, announced Wednesday, mean Japan is joining a host of other Asian nations in what is being dubbed the 'Asian space race'.

It is the latest in a series of ambitious plans announced by Asian countries, with rising competition for space-related power mirroring the space race raged between the United States and the USSR during the cold war in the mid-20th century.

In December 2016, China announced its intentions to put a man on the moon by 2036, as well as plans to land a rover on Mars by 2020.

India became the fourth country to plant its flag on the moon in 2008, behind the US, Russia and China, and plans to land a second unmanned probe on the lunar surface by mid-2018.

The country is yet to announce plans for a manned mission to moon.

Jaxa's moon mission was proposed to a panel at Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology this week, which is responsible for directing the country's space exploration.

A Jaxa spokesperson told CNN the plan wasn't to send an exclusively Japanese rocket to the Moon, which would be extremely costly.

They said the proposal was for Jaxa to contribute to a multinational manned lunar probe by contributing technology, which would grant Japan a spot on the mission.

The spokesperson told CNN a plan for Japan's future space exploration would be released by the panel in time for Japan's International Space Exploration Forum in March 2018...

Not much honor to be earned here.

They'd better focus on putting a woman on the moon. That would be a first!

Up to you guys to decide who that woman's gonna be...

It's the JAXA facility near my house, In 10 years here I have never seen that gate open, it's a weird coincidence Google drove by when it was. Even the hanger door is open, you never see anything open in the whole facility. They had an "open" day a few years back, it was sparse, like 3 scale models of concept models in a corner office, not a peak inside the hangers.

I'm not saying ancient aliens, but I do wonder about the historical associations of the airport over the road.

If they try to build space stuff there I'm pretty sure their issues are 200% more about dust and humidity/heat climate control than North Korean farmer spies...

I would put most of my bet against dust though...

Lab clean rooms are boring as fuck to operate... I don't want to be anywhere near the guy responsible for a room sized for car or aircraft sized stuff...

Either it is a bugger of a commute for Legion from Tanegashima or Kakuda every day, or he doesn't realise that JAXA has numerous locations and facilities. But then again, if he thinks that a jet engine works in space....

If Legion is in Kakuda he's a neighbor and I need to know ... although if it is Kakuda I'd probably already know, so I doubt it.

I know they have lots of locations. There are two in humble Mitaka for starters.

Are you trying to tell me Thunderbirds isn't real?

On a serious note I do wonder quite how much window dressing goes on in Japan to comply with the pacifist constitution.
