At 10.30pm on a cold December night in 2019, a former titan of the global car industry lay bundled inside a box on board a plane, waiting to flee Japan.
"The plane was scheduled to take off at 11pm," recalls Carlos Ghosn.
"The 30 minutes waiting in the box on the plane, waiting for it to take off, was probably the longest wait I've ever experienced in my life."
Now, for the first time, the man who was once the boss of both Nissan and Renault has detailed his daring escape.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Mr Ghosn tells how he disguised himself to slip unnoticed through the streets of Tokyo, why a large music equipment box was chosen to smuggle him out of Japan and the elation he felt when he finally landed in his native Lebanon.

The defence asked that time in detention in the US be taken into account. The judge said they were not detained under Japanese law, so limited the mitigation.

Yet another "didn't happen in Japan, doesn't count" take. I suppose the steel in US detention wasn't forged in glorious Nippon and they didn't get the full futon experience.

Imagine if the US took that approach to this situation? No crime committed under US law, hands are tied when it comes to extradition.

I guess when you embarrass yourself on the global stage, you need some fodder to reclaim some face.

"I had the prosecutor from Tokyo telling me that I'm being arrested because I did not declare a compensation that was neither decided nor paid. I don't understand how you can arrest a person for something which was not the object of a decision or not even of payment.

Suspicion of conspiracy on undecided, unpaid payments...

Ghosn believes the goal was to silence him.

"After I was arrested in Nov. 2018 I couldn't talk," he says. "When I was in prison I couldn't talk. When I was freed on bail I tried to convene a press conference, I was rearrested immediately to avoid this press conference taking place. After I was freed again the chief prosecutor said, you know, 'Mr. Ghosn is free to make a press conference but we are also free to press charges,' so it was very clear that they have staged what I call a character assassination campaign immediately after my arrest and they want to be the only one to speak."

Arrested on new charges that were past their statute of limitations "because time outside Japan doesn't count."

At the end of the day, the charges are all about hiding compensation that the company was in agreement to pay to keep Ghosn, not some sort of gaijin embezzlement conspiracy like it's being made out to be.

Pretty obvious the "old boys" at Nissan wanted to avoid ceding more control to Renault and this mess is the result. Nissan will likely never recover and follow Toyota into the flaming dumpster fire of ignorant and stubborn Japanese corporations.

Nissan should be dead soon. Mitsu is dead but don’t accept/know it yet. And the future of Renault is not guaranteed…

Portions of the document were displayed at Kelly’s trial, as key evidence to prove Kelly’s innocence, but never the full document. And because of court secrecy rules, the media couldn’t take photographs. Thus the document, despite being exculpating, could not be seen by the public.

THIS is my biggest issue with the local "justice" system. The prosecutors are not required to disclose exculpatory evidence. Extremely fucked missing piece of due process. Basically, it means they can (and they do) conceal evidence that would prove the accused is innocent and there is no accountability when doing so sends innocent individual to prison.

This really makes the situation for Kelley even more disgusting as he was apparently on trial for Shiga's actions, and not his own work. The Saikawa bribe attempt and other bullshit....holy corruption batman....

Not going to claim Ghosn is a posterchild of innocence here but his explanation of the mutiny against him does seem to continue to play out as he claimed. Too bad Japan will never agree to an international trial as it would be quite interesting to get a balanced understanding.

The house Carlos Ghosn is living in in Beirut was one bought for the purpose of providing him with a place to live there, before all this shit hit any fans, by a company set up in 2012 by Renault/Nissan for that purpose?
