Japanese Woman Hurt in London Riots

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Aug 11, 2011 9:32 am

The Japanese Embassy in London has reported that a Japanese woman in her 30s was assaulted on Monday night in the Silvertown area of East London. A group of youths apparently surrounded the woman and then struck her while also robbing her. She sustained a head injury. Silvertown hasn't been reported as a flash point elsewhere but it wouldn't be surprising if gangs had been on the streets in other parts of London that night, looking for opportunities.

In other news... shit happens... movie at 11...

She's lucky it's just rioters... If it had been chavs, her remains would already have been sold to a meat packer and turned into pet food...

There really weren't any riots in Silvertown. The closest would have been a small affair on the other side of the river in Woolwich or the larger trouble in Lewisham. North of the river, the biggest rucks were much further north in Bethnal Green and Hackney. It sounds like an opportunistic mugging. It probably wouldn't have happened if gangs hadn't been all over the streets that night. Depending on what time it happened, there's a fair chance the group was heading to other parts of town or on its way back.

"Opportunistic": now there's a word that I think describes 90% of what's going on.
I thought the U.K. was supposed to be a civilized place. Right now it is looking pretty low.

Not really. Never been there so I've never experienced the place firsthand, but I was under the impression that it was relatively civilized. Looks like I was somewhat misinformed.

Hmm ... makes Melbourne look positively idyllic.

I've never been either but everything I've heard from English guys and seen on the news and in movies makes the place seem like a total dump full of angry minorities and even angrier white trash. When I think of England I think of football hooligans, chavs and Guy Ritchie films not Peter Rabbit and Mary Poppins. ;)

I love London but I have always felt the undercurrent of agression everywhere. When you are in a busy pub, you feel as if a pub fight is not too far away given the right/wrong conditions. The night buses are full of loud, drunk and mostly happy people, but there is always the sense that a mob could develop quickly.

People seem to arc up more so than in other places I have visited at the slightest of provocation. Got no evidence for any of this as it is just a personal opinion.

I wrote elsewhere on FG last year "I don't recognize any description of Britain which would characterize the country as a woolly-liberal, tolerant society" and was accused of taking the piss.

There's always been an undercurrent of violence in Britain which flares up from time to time. I don't think anyone could have foreseen this particular manifestation but it didn't come out of the blue. The 2006 film "Kidulthood" described this environment pretty well and was made before the economy went down the drain. Funnily enough, it was shown on the BBC just over a month ago.

How has the response of the London authorities thus far to these "youths," as you call them, been anything other than the very model of wooly liberalism and an almost amae tolerance?

England has indeed always had no shortage of angry, sometimes violent, mobs. These mobs were in the past a source for good, and help explain why concepts like civil law and individual freedom developed long before they did on the Continent. Neverless, it's difficult to see much good coming from the current unpleasantness.

-catone
-though hidden under the anodyne "youth" terminology is what is apparently turning into a conflict between London's blacks and its islamomaniacs.

There is mass rioting in Spain and England. How long until it starts up in Japan and the United States?
