Tokyo's subway revamped to make it more foreigner friendlyThursday April 1, 6:05 PM
TOKYO (AFP) - Tokyo's subway network has had a spring makeover, receiving a new mapping system aimed at making it easier for foreign visitors to find their way around.
As of Thursday, the Teito Rapid Transit Authority which operates eight of 12 subway lines in the capital, has changed its name to Tokyo Metro Co., and has assigned a letter of the alphabet to each line and numbered each station in sequence.

The new system SUCKS!! I've noticed most of the new maps on the Oedo line have ONLY the numbers, or Japanese. So, a foreigner visiting who can't read Japanese asks a native how to get to E23. Of course, the Japanese has NO IDEA what they're talking about.. Great system!..

And this is a society that's afraid of Day Light Saving Time because it's 'too confusing'?.. The Japanese thrive on making things more difficult than it has to.. I'm preplexed.

I also think the Metro/McDonald's logo is shite!..

OK.. It's Friday. At least the McMetro is always on time.. and the skirts are getting shorter.. and boobs bigger.. I love Japan!

where is number h08 but who is number h08

The oedo-line has letters and numbers.. I catch it everyday and I checked it out this morning. My station is E (nantoka) I can't remember..

Shinjuku is E23 I think.

Who knows - I will still use the names.

I think it all looks rather tacky actually.

Have a friend over at the moment and we went to the station to get a map in English for her. No update with the numbering system.
All the new Japanese maps have the new system, but the English ones don't.

This system was developed to help who? :roll:

eh I like the station names more - although whichever smartie came up with the idea of colour-coding each train line should have been awarded a Nobel Prize....
