Self-service gas stations exploding with problems

Only in Japan would you hear about people worrying about getting blown up at a self service gas station. I guess the full service guys are starting to get worried. A few years ago when the self service stations got the go ahead, everybody said no Japanese would pump their own gas. Well I guess they were wrong. I've been pumping my own gas(sounds a bit strange) for years in Canada and have never heard about anything like this.

Yeah, I don't get it. I mean, the gas stations have dire warnings about smoking while filling the tank, but I have never heard anything warning women about wearing static electricity producing clothes. Are they pumping some kind of crazy gasoline with a lower ignition energy requirement than in north America? Or, is the gasoline being slopped all over the place by inexperienced self pumpers or bad equipment?

If Japanese men pump their own gas the same way they use public urinals, you can bet it's getting splashed all over the ground.

WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!!!! In 15 years of only self serve car fueling, both LPG and petrol(gas for you US guys) I have never had a flash fire. That is with farm hand filling, Watercraft filling and using the fancy electric pumps at the servo's (filling stations). you need a fair spark to ignite the fumes, or an ignition source like a match or a lit cigarette. I also like the bit about the ave temp of 30deg C being a contributing factor, where I have lived that is also an average it makes little difference except to thin the fuel slightly so the Density of the fuel is lower in the warm days so a litre of fuel in summer isn't as good as a litre in winter. It is just the full service guys trying to justify their existence as happend in Australia when self serve became the norm.
