Nearly two dozen Vietnamese being held at the West Japan Immigration Center in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, are on a hunger strike to protest their prolonged incarceration.

The hunger strike began Tuesday night, after the group sent an appeal to lawyers and human rights groups, saying that they had been held at the center for an unreasonable length of time.

Some have been held at the center for nearly two years.

Buuuuuuut....

The 23 were boat people who arrived in Japan between in 1989 and 1991 before being granted residency status.

All have served time in Japanese prisons for murder, theft and other serious crimes.

After being released from prison, they were ordered deported and placed in the detention center.

However, because of their status as former boat people, the Vietnamese government has refused to take them back.

Double fucked gaijin!...

Note to self: only commit murder in own country.

I was just thinking, (imaginge that): These gaijin came to Japan in 90. Killed somebody, probably a year or two after arriving (1992). Went to jail for murder, or as the Japan Times states, 'serious crimes'. Was released, and attempted to return to Vietnam, but failed (probably a year process). Then, have been held in purgatory for about 2 more years? (Let's say a year)... That means, these gaijin served about 9 years for 'murder or serious crimes'?

Either these gaijin got out on good behavior, or the Japan Times is full of shit. I wonder if overstaying a visa is considered 'murder or serious crime'..

...Between 1996 and 2000, they were convicted separately
for crimes that included murder and theft, and
sentenced to prison terms, which ended between May
2002 and last May.

Immediately after either completing their prison terms
or being released on parole, they were separately
ordered to leave Japan for Vietnam and held at the
center. Their detention has been prolonged because
Vietnam has refused to accept the three.

On Thursday, the plaintiffs' lawyers quoted them as
saying that Japanese immigration authorities continue
to detain them in violation of the Constitution, which
ensures people the right to move freely.

Vietnam has refused to repatriate many refugees, and
the plaintiffs have endured prolonged detention, the
longest being 17 months.

OSAKA -- Amid concerns over allegations of human rights abuses at the WestJapan Immigration Detention Center in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, local nongovernmental organizations will form an immigration watchdog group later this month.
....immigration authorities reported that a detained Vietnamese man had committed suicide.
"It has been common at the center for the administration to ignore the length of confinement specified on the immigration detention order," wrote Daka in a letter to the local media after the Vietnamese death. "A number of refugees, students, Asians and others have been detained for more than a year with no provisions of bail or clear explanations of why they have to be deported."
