Jenkins to Turn Himself in.

Postby sirwanksalot » Wed Sep 01, 2004 2:01 pm

By George Nishiyama and Linda Sieg

TOKYO (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier accused of deserting to North Korea in 1965 and now in hospital in Japan said on Wednesday he was willing to report voluntarily to the U.S. military in Japan to face charges, a step toward resolving a diplomatic standoff between Tokyo and Washington.

"When I stepped onto the plane that carried my family and me from Indonesia to Japan, it was my full intention to voluntarily report to the U.S. Army base in Japan to face the allegations that have been charged against me," Jenkins said in a statement released through the Japanese government.

U.S. Deserter to Turn Himself In
TOKYO Sept. 1, 2004 --
...Jenkins' offer to surrender, contained in a letter released by the Japanese government....
...gave no precise timetable for his surrender, saying only that he expected he would be healthy enough to leave the Japanese hospital where he has been since July "very shortly."
....The counsel, identified by Japanese media as Capt. James Culp, was seen entering Jenkins' hospital Wednesday afternoon, but there were no signs that Jenkins' was planning to immediately check out.
In his three-paragraph letter, Jenkins did not hint at what his legal strategy would be. He thanked the Japanese government and praised the "excellent medical care" he has received there.

Very interesting article about Jenkins in the Far Eastern Economic Review in which he talks to the media for the first time.

HAH! I beat your FEER.com post by 1 minute!
Look at this snotty FEER allusion-- Why don't they just say the obvious, that he's a 'tard and his lawyer should be copping a 'diminshed capacity' plea?

Yeah you beat me!

My only question is who is Dresnok and who did they marry him off to?

Why is he doing this NOW? I would think he should wait until after the election - I have no idea how Kerry would treat him, but Bush has stated that no pardon will be forthcoming.

Unless, perhaps, proceedings will take so long that the next president will be the one to decide his fate.
