Responding to Sgt. Charles Robert Jenkins's pledge to surrender after spending four decades in North Korea, U.S. military officials say they are ready to put the frail 64-year-old back in uniform, give him a haircut, set him up in on-base housing -- and then try him for desertion.
"We're always ready to take in deserters and receive them back," said Maj. John Amberg, spokesman for the U.S. army, Japan headquarters, at Camp Zama, just south of Tokyo....he would be assigned to a new unit, receive pay and other benefits and be able to live on base with his family.

What's going to happen after he is tried? I dishonorable discharge? Jail time? or what?

I think the old timer has been through enough. Let him fade away as a deserter and be done with it.. there is no point in making an example of the man... that's just revenge...

Let him finish his last few years in peace..

so that's the secret to a good life in Japan for a FG. It's not enough to have a Japanese spouse. You need to be a military deserter and "come back in from the cold" (oh how I miss those cold war terms/cliches )
