How much does one night entertained by a geiko or geisha cost? I'm sure it is hefty, but I'm just curious.

Gee, nobody pays for those old ladies: it's always OPM on an "entertainment" account.

Sorry....I should have read this, but didn't notice it until I was about to sumbit my post. But, I wrote so much and my head's like jelly today, so I'll keep this post unchanged.

Onsen geisha are cho mega-kool. Randy early-30s farmwives looking for pale alien excitement ... YUM!
Hell, I even got a FREE pussy puppet show in Izu just because I naively asked what they were talking about with the other customers and the ladies found it easier to show me than explain in pre-kindergarden Japanese.

On the other hand, a few times back in the Bubble Dayz....Canon Sales wasted 500,00yen to entertain me and two of their tech translation "directors" . All we got 70-year-old-lady giggles, cat-singing and 3-string banjo flaying in Ginza for three hours. Sheesh. The onsen geisha sang better, cooked food a gaijin would like, got me roaring dunk, and made my futon for a final inn tab of 16,000yen.

Liza Crihfield Dalby

Liza Dalby first went to Japan as a teenager, spending a year with a family in Saga City, on the southernmost island of Kyushu. In the late 1960s Saga was quite rural--a very different environment from the bustle of Tokyo or sophistication of Kyoto. Liza was the first, and at the time the only, foreign student at Saga University. Since she knew only the barest rudiments of Japanese when she arrived, and without any English-speakers in the area, the first few months were quite difficult. Yet painful as it was at the time, it was also a very effective way to absorb Japanese language and social skills. Walking down the street one day, she heard the sound of the shamisen and was immediately entranced. Her Japanese family arranged for lessons with the local nagauta teacher, and thus Liza began to study the instrument that was later to prove crucial in making connections to the geisha world.

Geisha charges

Postby Marvin Feltcher » Sun Oct 10, 2004 1:52 pm

I can now give some official prices. I've just spent the past two days with four of the loveliest from Hachioji's apparently thriving karyukai. It was a riot and I had a fantastic time making a complete dickhead of myself while the geisha were fascinated with my enormous beer belly!
Hachioji has Tokyo's biggest geisha community, with about 20 young women and the same number of old women (their explanation).
Their charges are as follows:
1 Geisha
30 mins. - 3,000 yen
1 hour - 6,000 yen
2 hours - 12,000 yen
Plus all food, expenses and travel costs. Time starts from the moment they leave their okiya and they prefer a minimum of two hours. Extensions of 30-minutes each are possible for as long as their schedules permit.
They also prefer geisha to travel in pairs. The prices for two geisha are simply double the above figures.
For more information, call Hachioji Miban at 0426-22-5191. I recommend Ayume

That is a lot cheaper than what I would have expected. Interesting.

I can say from personal experience that the Maiko don't just dance. My uncle lives in Kyoto and took me to one of the tea houses that supports Maiko.

It's very similar to a hostess club, except everything is Japanese, the food and drinks are Japanese (not beer or wine), and they wear the traditional clothing as Chris listed below.

I've never met a Geiko or an apprentice, so I can't comment on those items.
