Hitachi May Introduce 140 Mile-Per-Hour Bullet Trains to U.K.

The trains, the Shinkansen 400 series, will operate on the London to Ramsgate and London to Ashford lines, Hitachi said in a statement e-mailed to Bloomberg News. Traveling at speeds of as much as 140 miles per hour (225 kilometers per hour), journey times would be cut by as much as 45 minutes.

Would the UK market pay Shinkansen prices?
Also.... it has been 29 ago but I could have sworn that I've traveled at speeds over 100 mph on the Flying Scotsman. Why would they by 300% more expensive Hitachi shinkancrap when they could buy Bombardier jet trains built in the UK?

We do already for sub-standard trains. The price for London to Manchester quoted to me the other day: Standard Open return at 182 pounds (around 35,000 yen). Even a saver return would be 52 pounds (fixed dates, no travel in peak periods, wear red underpants etc)
Britain is expensive and London in particular. Japanese friends of mine think it is more expensive for them than Tokyo.
Given how large the tourism industry is in the UK, it somewhat undermines the argument that cost is the main reason more tourists don't visit Japan.

Doesn't the Eurostar travel at shinkansen speeds? I know it does in other countries but in the UK?

the British opened the first section of their own high-speed track: 46 miles from the Chunnel entrance to a point about 26 miles east of London. I had the good fortune to ride on an inaugural press trip on September 27—among the first that actually carried passengers over the new line. Since Eurostar was going for a record time, the train exceeded the nominal limit of 300 kph: We actually hit 324 kph (about 202 mph) on a few stretches. We did set the record, at two hours and 18 minutes from Waterloo Station to Gare du Nord. And even though the ride is smooth, hitting over 200 mph in a train is a spectacular experience.

Prices? Expensive as fuck...

Tranrapid

Postby goldenboy_ge » Mon Nov 01, 2004 1:21 am

Hello guys

Everybody forgot to mentioned the German Transrapid :) . This cute little peace of steel is even too expensive for the Germans. However it's the only High Speed Technology Transport System that can hold up with the Japanese Shinkansen. German VS Japan Tech

It seems the Chinese are pretty satisfied. Here a few specs:

Transrapid Shanghai sets new world record with 501 km/h (311 mph)
Chinese Media says it's "mature, safe and reliable"
and many more check out http://www.transrapid.de/en/index.html
