Japan voices disappointment at departure of 'balanced' Powell
Channel News Asia, Singapore - 9 minutes ago
TOKYO:
Japan expressed disappointment at the resignation of the "well-balanced" US Secretary of State Colin Powell but said it expected the alliance between the countries to remain strong.
"I feel very disappointed that he is leaving," said Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda, the government spokesman.
"As an extremely well-balanced secretary of state, he did a great job," Hosoda told reporters....

Taro-san, I think your title hit this one squarely on the head. It was delicately said, to be sure, but that may be one of the most honest criticisms you'll read from a cabinet secretary regarding the US.

Damn, Richard Armitage too!

Armitage resigns along with Powell
By Kohei Murayama
WASHINGTON, Nov. 16, Kyodo -

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage has tendered his resignation along with Secretary of State Colin Powell before President George W. Bush starts his second term Jan. 20, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Tuesday.
The departure of the two top State Department officials may signal a change in U.S. foreign policy, particularly for Asia, as the two, along with Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs James Kelly, have formed a team pursuing alliances with other nations and are considered moderate voices within the hawkish Bush administration.
For Japan, Armitage's departure means losing one of its key connections with the U.S. government as he has worked to strengthen the alliance with Japan
and to promote cooperation with Tokyo in various areas, most notably on resolving issues related to North Korea through dialogue.....more...

mmmm I wonder if there would have been any change to the election results of all of these resignations were known earlier. I know there is always a changing of the guards but IMO Powell was the most sensible (apart from that whole WMD presentation to the UN)

RICE is all the rice eaters understand. If rice is gone, there is nothing to feed the country! That is why we all love RICE. Even more if rice is gone.

Colin Powell has received too much credit, all of it undue. Acting as a voice of moderation is fine; but one may only act as a moderate voice for a finite amount of time before he or she begins to lend legitimacy to the very regime he or she objects to. If Colin Powell had stepped down long ago, in protest to the way in which things were done, then indeed, he would have retained much of the valuable ideology he purportedly stands for. In other words, by staying on Colin Powell has served to justify every action of the administration by simply acting as a figure not wholly supportive of the administration at large: thus giving the public the ability to perceive (if they see fit) the actions taken as well thought-out and planned policy. In a society where doctrines no longer go unquestioned it is only proper that under a regime wrought with Straussian scholars that the new higher-power and myth of uniqueness (and the nation) now also, in accordance with changing societal norms, be seen as something questioned even by those in power. I would call him a sell-out, not a statesman.
