Kyodo: Tokyo High Court acquits Pakistani, says policeman not credible
The Tokyo High Court acquitted a Pakistani man Thursday of assaulting a Japanese policeman, quashing a lower court ruling that gave him a suspended prison term, saying the policeman's testimony was not credible. Presiding Judge Masaru Suda said, "The policeman's testimony contains falsehoods" and was generally not very credible, citing discrepancies in statements given by the officer and his colleagues over the incident.
...In court, Gilani denied that he assaulted the policeman and argued instead that he was the one assaulted. He also argued he was arrested after he complained that the policeman's violence against him was discriminatory and threatened to expose it in the media.
...Shotaro Tochigi, deputy chief prosecutor at the Tokyo High Public Prosecutors Office, expressed regret over the not-guilty ruling on Gilani and said the prosecution will respond accordingly after examining it.
