
Up to 13,000 may die in event of Tokyo earthquake: gov't panel
(Kyodo) _ As many as 13,000 people may die in the event of a major earthquake striking Tokyo and its vicinity, with 850,000 buildings damaged, according to a report by a government panel on disaster measures obtained Tuesday.
The Cabinet Office Central Disaster Management Council said the casualties will come mainly from areas with concentrated wooden housing in the capital and three surrounding prefectures of Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa, government sources said.
