Frenchman in Kyoto busted over faux 10,000-yen notes
Mainichi
KYOTO -- A French resident of the ancient capital of Japan has been arrested for making counterfeit 10,000-yen notes on his home computer, police said.

The 29-year-old jobless man admitted to the allegations during questioning, police said. "I made them for fun," he was quoted as telling investigators.

The man used his personal computer and scanner to copy a 10,000-note and made more than 10 imitations of the bill at his home in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, in around June, local police said.

A 28-year-old woman from Fukuoka Prefecture, who was visiting the Kyoto Imperial Palace for sightseeing, reported to police that she had seen a foreigner in the area acting suspiciously. Police officers interrogated the man and arrested him after finding fake notes in his wallet.

I hate these new notes. Every time I use one, whoever gets it spends hours looking at it like I've just passed them a fake. Pricks!

As Steve B. and I have warned about before: Just say NO!
This French guy could told the cops to bugger themselves but instead ended up ratting himself out during "voluntary" interrogatation.

Follow the advice of super-f'ed gaijin, Arudou Debito aka Dave Aldwinckle:
Arbitrary ID checks by Japanese Police, and what to do about them

If the Japanese cops start to hastle you:
1) Politely avoid as best you can willingly going to the cop station: The answer is, "I don't want to talk to you." Once you're in the station, the cops have 20+ days to torture you without formal charges: Think rubber hose, dogleash optional.

2) Lawyers in Japan are honor-bound to "serve society" as well as you. Sounds nice, don't it. It AIN'T. Japanese lawyers serve society by ratting you out; client privilege is not sacrosanct in Japan.

3) Except for driving, ALWAYS claim you were drunk.
The Shinto gods were all drunks and all things can be forgiven if you were drunk. Pour booze all over your clothing and take a good swig.

Oh Steve B says, "Absolutely refuse to budge from your story,"

And hold fast!!!

I was witness to this last week. A friend was interrogated and soon surrounded by near 10 cops and a cop car with its lights on.
He held fast and some of us friends came around and started lookylou-ing and they let him go 40 min later.

It was just a random check...yeah right. More like a random <gaijin> check

Well thanks for the tip, I'll use it when I come to Japan.

For tip 3), I barley doubt that it's gonna work for me.

Acting suspiciously. Ha!

Postby canman » Mon Dec 13, 2004 6:48 pm

What the hell does that really mean."A 28-year-old woman from Fukuoka Prefecture, who was visiting the Kyoto Imperial Palace for sightseeing, reported to police that she had seen a foreigner in the area acting suspiciously. Police officers interrogated the man and arrested him after finding fake notes in his wallet."
I mean was he walking around holding the bills up in the air and laughing this demonic French laugh or what. Or was he lurking around trying to find a good patsy to pawn the notes off on. Hell that could have been anyone of us Fgaijin out there. Thanks for the advice Taro and Marvin, I too had a run in with the police a long time ago. Just finished work, got home and my two buddies were waiting to go drinking. They had already started and I drank half a chuhi, before I remembered I had to post this crap to headoffice. Jumped on my trusty scooter, and just near the post office a police road block. They stopped me and smelled my breath, and of course couldn't speak any English, kept gesturing if I had been drinking. They kept me there for a while, at which point my friends came along and asked what was going on, lets go we were going to be late for a movie etc. They let me go, but not before scaring the sh#t out of me. But I never said yes to anything, luckily

I assume the later. Or maybe for being a Frenchmen. What bothers me the most is that the guy was caught with a bunch of fake bills, so why are we so busy defending the asshole. Jerks like that are the reason foreigners get such a bad reputation in this country.

thng is tho, canman - you were guilty - theres no excuse whatsover for drink drivng or speeding (no matter how "good" anyone thinks they are) so, really you deserved to get busted really. hopefully that run in taught you a lesson.

have you lost any friends due to a drink/driver? (and dont say "just 1" is ok, as it really isnt.) I have. you should be ashamed of yourself rather than boasting about it as something you got out of.

I wasn't boasting

I see your point Kots, but a I really don't think half a can of chu hi would be considered drunk driving, and yes I did learn a lesson from it.
