Condom Testing Reveals Best Brands
By Maggie Fox, Reuters

WASHINGTON (Jan. 5) - The consumers group best known for rating cars and washing machines has turned its testing prowess to condoms to find out which ones measure up best and how other birth control methods compare.
An assortment of condoms offered during a World AIDS Day ceremony at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, Ill., Dec. 1, 2004.

The nonprofit Consumers Union says in a new guide to contraception that the seven top U.S. types of condom they studied did not burst despite vigorous testing, and all models met international standards.

But results showed that the top brand, able to take the most punishment, was the Durex Extra Sensitive Lubricated Latex, according to the report.

Other top-performers include the Durex Performax Lubricated, Lifestyles Classic Collection Ultra Sensitive Lubricated and TheyFit Lubricated.

A melon-colored model distributed by Planned Parenthood performed the worst, bursting during a test in which the latex condoms were filled with air.

The group says its review of contraceptives was not politically motivated, although there is an intense debate among health professionals and advocacy groups about the focus on abstinence-only education by the Bush administration.

"We plan our testing programs quite a while in advance. This is purely accidental," said senior editor Nancy Metcalf.

Consumers Union uses standardized tests to rate the products it examines, which for latex condoms involves filling them with air. There is no accepted method to test silicon or non-latex condoms.

"You end up with a balloon 3 feet (a metre) tall and a foot (30 cm) wide. They can really stretch an amazing amount," Metcalf said in a telephone interview.

The New York-based organization, which publishes the Consumer Reports magazine, also tested 16 other contraceptive choices.

How exactly does filling a condom with air to several times it's normal size prove it's performance?

Performance as air force survival gear, sure (they're issued to pilots since they can be used to store 3 gallons of water).

I would think shelf-life, ease of proper use, resistance to permeability, and being able to withstand friction (*cough*) at a normal size (meaning not filled to 800% normal size with air) would be more imporant than how much air it can hold.

Consumer Reports said in the article that this air inflation test correlates well to actual failure in the field. I don't know what evidence that is based on, but they are a careful organization.

Well, it may demonstrate resistance to failure by "blowout," essentially it's tensile strength, but it still doesn't show any other performance as far as I can see (User friendliness? :D).

It seems like testing a tire for puncture resistance and then forgetting to test how well it grips, resistance against snow, rain, or tread life.

I was wondering when someone would ask that question. Unfortunately, no. I am planning to adopt two wiemeraners next year. They will have the same coloring as the one if the picture. GREAT HYPER DOGS. Love em.

Regarding the condom testing.....
Would like to see research tests on condoms around the world. Which countries rank the best in safety, comfort and satisfaction. Dont know why, just curious.
I remeber my ex and I were in Japan and he was looking for some condoms, heck, I had NO idea which were the best ones. I told him to ask one of our friends to ship some to us. LOLOL couldnt ask my parents to buy them on base..
