American arrested for burning down historic church in Yokohama
Mainichi
YOKOHAMA -- A U.S. citizen was arrested for arson on Tuesday after he admitted lighting a fire that razed a historic church in Yokohama, police said.

The 23-year-old suspect, Douglas Masaru Miller, a resident of Yokohama's Naka-ku, was arrested after he turned himself in to police at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday, saying he had set the Yokohama Yamate Sei Ko Kai church in Naka-ku on fire.

Police investigators said the 23-year-old set fire to a conference room next to the altar in the church at about 6:10 p.m. on Tuesday, razing 460 square meters of the two-story building.

A "gaijin" torches an underused church in Japan. I wonder what his problem was besides having a Japanese middle name "Masaru"?

Holy crap, I was in that church in April for my best friend's wedding! Boy will he be shocked to hear this news. Well, not so much him, as his wife, who picked that church.

Holy Shit I hope your friends will be OK, please pass on my condolences to them.

Have you made some arrangements, so we the Loyal Fucked Gaijin Lifers Society (L.F.G.L.S.) can help them out in any way we could?

I emailed my friend and he didn't seem too upset about it, other than to curse at the foreign devil that torched it. His wife made all the wedding arrangements and of course he had no say in the picking the location.

That church doesn't look anything like a Don Quijote store. What was he thinking?

I was wondering that too... Does anyone have any more info on this? How about the people who mentioned they live near or drive by it? Is it totally gone?
