Of tsunamis and earthquakes...

Both before and after the recent tsunami disaster, I happened to be watching the series Savage Earth that I picked up on DVD here in China (it's usually touted as the "Discovery" series by the locals, but in reality it's just a collection of various science, history & nature programs from a few years back).
Airing in 1998, the series explains the science behind tsunamis and earthquakes (with detailed comparisons between the 1994 Northridge quake and that in Kobe)

Just as long as the retarded talking heads on the news would stop saying tsunamis, I'd be happy. Meh. I mean, would you say milks?

Before, musicians produced a "sonic tsunami," Wall Street analysts foresaw "tsunamis" of bad earnings news and Japanese restaurants served "tsunami" sushi rolls.
The word was used in dozens of different contexts, but now it likely will appear with just one, tragic, meaning, a language group said on Wednesday.
Because of the South Asian tsunami disaster that has killed more than 150,000 people, the word assumes a solely solemn use, much the way "Ground Zero," for the site of the World Trade Center...more...

I think that's a tough call... Certainly as a Japanese word it doesn't get an "s" added to it.

But it is a wave... And waves are considered "countable" items.

What really cracks me up is that when "tsunami" was first introduced the reason for using it instead of "tidal wave" is that it was said to be more scientifically correct, or some such bullshit.

Harbor Wave... Tidal Wave... Neither is particularly "scientific" from my viewpoint.

I used to listen to Tsunami back in the day...but they've been over for a while.

It seems to me that a program on tsunami could be interesting if done well. There a lot of basic physics involved and I'm generally interested in that sort of thing. Though it'd be too bad if it gets overloaded with the weight of the Indoneasian tsunami...

::Edit:: 'tsunamis makes me think of salamis, both are mostly avoidable killers but putting the plural 's' on tsunami just sounds wrong to me.
