Japanese judicial system to face reforms

Postby cstaylor » Mon Nov 04, 2002 1:56 pm

In a modern society, justice must not only be done, but seen to be done
There is no need to tell Etsuko Yamada what can happen when police are left to question suspects as they see fit.

When the bodies of a boy and a girl were discovered in a septic tank at a facility for mentally disabled children in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1974, local police came under intense pressure to find the culprit-and fast. Though she strenuously denied having anything to do with their deaths, Yamada, who worked at the facility, was detained by the police and questioned for 22 days
