Kyodo: Relatives of slain S Korean student sue yakuza bosses
The family of a South Korean student shot dead by Japanese gangsters in 2001 filed a 141 million yen damages suit Monday against bosses of the Sumiyoshi-kai, one of the country's three major underworld syndicates, and his subordinates, lawyers for the plaintiffs said. In the suit lodged with the Tokyo District Court, the relatives of Yun Won Ju, then 24, sued the syndicate's two top bosses and the members of a group affiliated with it, claiming the leaders bear responsibility for the murder. Yun was killed in October 2001 in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, when he was on his way home at a place where the gangsters in the Sumiyoshi-kai affiliate were carrying out a revenge shooting against other gangsters...The head of the affiliated gang is wanted for murder of the student and is on the run. In a precedent-setting decision last year, the Supreme Court recognized the responsibility of a syndicate boss who is not directly involved in committing a crime.
