MDN: NHK news site mistakenly reports collapse of Shinjuku Station
A mistake by public broadcaster NHK resulted in information designed for the event of a natural disaster being posted on a cell phone site used by thousands of people, it has been learned. The news service information, which could be seen for about 20 hours between Thursday and Friday, included such statements as "JR line tracks in all parts of the Metropolitan area are on fire," and "Shinjuku station has collapsed." NHK officials said the information was posted on a "tsunami information" corner of the site. Tests were reportedly being carried out to see whether the information would be displayed correctly, but after the tests finished at 4 p.m. on Thursday, the test system was not switched off, which made the information accessible from outside. Action was taken 13 minutes later following a user's inquiry about the information, but a number of users were still able to view the information until after noon on Friday, when it was taken off the site. "We offer our sincere apologies," an NHK representative said. "We intend to do our best to prevent this from happening again."
