SMH: March means a blossoming mask market
The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, looked over her podium towards an audience sprinkled with men and women in masks. The French President, Jacques Chirac, was confronted by similar scenes on a visit to Japan over Easter. The sight of masked people would have alarmed bodyguards and caused a terrorist alert almost anywhere else in the world. But not in Tokyo...So common is the mask that the effect is of a nation of bandits...A supplier of face masks says it has been a banner year for the industry. More than 150,000 masks were sold by one chain of pharmacies during the first three weeks of March.
