Cranky today aren't we? Actually I think changing the name is perfect. Honoring dead war criminals is most important than caring about the environment. Coloring concrete green has anyway been a pain in the ass. :P
Asahi: Showa Day April 29, the national holiday known as Midori no Hi, or Greenery Day, is likely to be renamed as Showa Day in 2007. A Lower House plenary session has already approved a bill for the name change. If it is enacted, Greenery Day will be moved to May 4, now part of the Golden Week national holidays. Two previous attempts, five years and two years ago, failed to pass the Diet due to strong opposition from the Social Democratic Party and the Japanese Communist Party. ...As part of the process of deciding the new name of the national holiday, Obuchi established a special advisory panel. At the same Cabinet Committee session, the then chief of the Cabinet Councillors Office on Internal Affairs also explained the decision: "Some people proposed to call it Showa Day. But considering the fact that the birthday of Emperor Meiji (Nov. 3) is now called Culture Day and also considering the spirit of the national holidays law, we have decided that Greenery Day is the most appropriate name." The national holidays law stipulates that national holidays should be days for the entire nation to celebrate, thank or commemorate something. Respecting the spirit of the law, the government back then chose Greenery Day over Showa Day. Seventeen years have since passed. Greenery Day has taken root as the name of the holiday. Why change it now?
Isn't the actual name "Green Day", not "Greenery Day"?
My understanding is that it was called Green Day because Emperor Showa's favorite colour was green... Nothing to do with nature.
If this is true then changing it back to Showa Day is just making something subtle more obvious.

I like your avatar Blah Pete... It's my real sitatuion at work too -- I have two PCs, one connected to the "real" network, another connected directly to a separate fibre line for, uh, "testing".
