I remember just after the 9-11 attacks having to speak to some older Japanese and they couldn't understand the terror attacks, so I compared them to the kamikazes. This was received with stony silience.

The more I thought about the more realized that their idealogies were essentially identical.

This is the reason most Japanese wish to forget the past. Who wouldn't if 60 years ago your country was a combination of North Korea which a dash of Al Qaeda on the side.
