MOSCOW — France on Tuesday won the bid to build the world's first nuclear fusion reactor backed by a six-party international consortium, after Japan gave up its bid in exchange for preferential arrangements to build a related materials research facility.
The decision to build the reactor in Cadarache in southern France was made at a ministerial meeting in Moscow attended by representatives f r o m China, the European Union, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States. Japan had been negotiating for more than three years in a bid to host the $13 billion project in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, but decided to compromise by forgoing the proposal due to the huge financial burden of building the reactor.
