Japan gives in over nuclear fusion bid

France to host world's 1st nuclear fusion reactor as Japan gives up bid

MOSCOW — France on Tuesday won the bid to build the world's first nuclear fusion reactor backed by a six-party international consortium, after Japan gave up its bid in exchange for preferential arrangements to build a related materials research facility.

The decision to build the reactor in Cadarache in southern France was made at a ministerial meeting in Moscow attended by representatives f r o m China, the European Union, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United States. Japan had been negotiating for more than three years in a bid to host the $13 billion project in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, but decided to compromise by forgoing the proposal due to the huge financial burden of building the reactor. I pay tribute every year to the great people who risked and sometimes sacrificed their lives for my country (Holland), and that includes a lot of Americans as well. But present-day assholes like you who base their foreign policy and their outlook on the world on something their grandfather did need to pull their heads out their collective asses as far as I'm concerned.

You're probably part of the same group of people who sincerely believe the primary incentive for the US to go to war with anyone since the Korean war is because the people needed to be liberated and democracy bestowed upon them.

Back to the topic at hand...
I feel a bit sorry for Rokkasho in Aomori Prefecture. The translation company I worked for in Tokyo had originally started in Aomori and still had a branch office there. Thus, we did a lot of the promotional literature for the Rokkasho facility.

A site in Rokkasho would have been a major plus for Tohoku, which sorely needs an economic/cultural/scientific shot in the arm. Look at the success of Tsukuba - this, despite its distance from Tokyo. Tohoku's main uni of note, Tohoku U, would have benefited as would Tohoku from 1) the media attention and 2) the influx of foreign tech and investment.

Sendai's bid for a major league team seems to have foundered, so here's hoping some other stimulus for the region surfaces.

Errrr, isn't that where the Rakuten Eagles play?

Japan is still getting an R&D center at Rokkasho. The EU will pay for half the construction (Japan only has to pay the bribes).

Socrates I agree with you that Tohoku, especially Aomori needs help in the many ways, but dumping the nuclear garbage dump on us, and then this experimental new reactor, no thanks. I think Aomori was chosen because people felt that we were desperate enough to take on anything that would help bring in jobs and money. Send us a Sharp Plasma screen factory or a Toyoto, hell we would even take a Daihatsu factory.
I'm not sure a lot or any of you other FG know but there is a farly large Franch population here in Aomori. They are working at the nuclear site. Presently there are about 100 people over here.

Yep, sorry about that - I was editing to remove 'f r o m's and didn't finish. I had meant to say:

Here, of course, I was referring to bidding by Livedoor & Rakuten and how fans felt in Sendai
The Sendai fans said in a survey that they wanted Livedoor instead of Rakuten to run the new franchise there, though Rakuten was thought to have more business stability.
