When you were born you were "1" because that is the smallest number there was. There's no kanji for zero just as there is no roman numeral for zero.

They used to piss me off when they talked about "Korean age" and "American age." I used to correct them and say no it's "Chinese age" and "the rest of the world's age." The concept of zero exists everywhere now, as far as I know. It just didn't exist historically (as a specific number) in most cultures.
