Japanese Photographer Killed in Burma

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Sep 27, 2007 9:35 pm

The Telegraph newspaper has photographs which purportedly show a Japanese photgrapher before and after being shot by a soldier during the crackdown in Rangoon.

Link here.

From the AFP report:

"The man was in his 50s and carried a Japanese passport. He was taken to Yangon General Hospital," said a Japanese diplomat. "We sent our staff to the hospital, but at this moment we have no further details"...He was the first foreign national killed in the junta's clampdown on pro-democracy demonstrations.

Japan's foreign ministry confirmed that a man found dead in Rangoon carrying a Japanese passport was Kenji Nagai, a video journalist who had been in Burma for Tokyo-based news agency APF News since Tuesday.
Japan would officially launch a protest with the Burmese government over Mr Nagai's death and demand an investigation into the incident, Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura as saying.

From what they said on the TV news this evening: the soldiers/police having beating the soles of the monks feet so they couldnt take part in the marching again anytime soon.

Heh - you won't catch Japanese monks protesting any time soon. Or any Japanese, for that matter. They all seem to have had the metaphorical soles of their feet beaten during their student years, and behave like the nice, submissive, docile, self-censoring nihonjin that they are.

Seriously, when was there a large-scale demonstration in Japan last? In the 1960s?

-well, I did see a platoon of shoe-polish-haired uyoku parading down the street during a summer festival in Hiratsuka.

In present Japan, people who demonstrate in public are treated as "perverted dudes".

Interesting; they showed video on NHK that appeared to show him being shot in the back.. But the official report is that the bullet entered in the chest and exited out the back.. Hhhhmmm..

He was a war journalist; in Iraq during the initial invasion.. I wonder if it was he who brought back the omiyage cluster bombs. (Sorry.. Couldn't resist)

Oh man.. I just saw on CNN International, they ran video recovered from the journalist's camera, next to an amateur video of the man getting shot. I felt sick to my stomach.
I haven't seen anything like this since the Tiananmen Square protests.

Lets see if Japan Foreign Ministry has enough balls to bring this to attention of a world court and prosecute these bastards. Notwithstanding - lets see if the SDF has the guts to enter Myamar and do the right thing for it's Asian neighbors.

Seems like they have balls of mochi... :nihonjin:

From ABC (Australia)
Japan's Deputy Foreign Minister Mitoji Yabunaka is on his way to Burma to demand an explanation about the death of a Japanese journalist.
Fifty-year-old Kenji Nagai was shot at close range as he filmed protests in Rangoon on Thursday.
Japan's Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda says he is weighing up his country's response.
"We will have to think carefully to figure out what is the best thing to do - what is the best choice for Japan?" he said.
"By sending Deputy Foreign Minister Yabunaka to Burma we will find a way to solve this issue, and to make further decisions. Sanctions are not the best step to take now." <article>

Now doesn't just reading that make you feel safer that the J-gov is on the way to save the day?

Take, what's your take (pun intended) on this? Maybe Nuke Burma for openers?

What a bunch of friggin pussies. 'Think carefully' - Ummm, the little nasty guy with a gun might,um shoot me or something.. They will probably be happy with a 'letter of apology' -- that usually gets any murderer right off and the Japanese people feeling oh-so-happy again... Pathetic. Yeah - he's right sanctions are not the best thing - then they'd be cutting off the supply of shabu and other pharms that contribute heavily to the corrupt piece of shit government in Japan.

You people are just not trying to look at the story from a juntaist point of view.

There they are just minding their own pillaging and looting business. It's not like they are invading anyone or doing any acts of internaional terrorism. Then some damn monks who aren't eating enough hamburgers or something start complaining. Duh! Like we are really going to hand the country over to them. Bet you they don't even know the difference between a Versace emsemble and Uniqlo.

Kyodo via Japan Today: Japan wants Myanmar to return slain reporter's camera
The Japanese government will urge Myanmar's junta to return a video camera a slain Japanese journalist is believed to have been using to cover clashes between security forces and pro-democracy demonstrators in Yangon, Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura said Monday. Machimura also said at a press conference that the Japanese government will conduct its own autopsy on Kenji Nagai, who may have been shot by security forces at extremely close range, after a local autopsy showed he did not have burns or gunpowder residue on his skin, as is usually the case when someone is shot at point-blank range. Nagai's belongings were returned to Japanese authorities, but they did not include the video camera, according to APF News Inc President Toru Yamaji, who is in Yangon. Myanmar, however, has said all belongings have been returned. Nagai was on contract with the Tokyo-based video news provider

Burmese goverment crackdown is so vague, so let's put some real faces on this. How 'bout we...

Get to know the Burma Military Junta Trio :devil2:

At #3: Lieutenant General Soe Win, 58
Image

Claim to fame: Commanded an infantry division which helped crush the democracy party in 1988 following Aung San Suu Kyi's overwhelming victory in national elections. Last year he relived that breakthrough evil dictator moment by orchestrating a bloody attack on Aung San Suu Kyi's convoy in the north of the country.
Best peronal traits: Controlling, evil, mean
Turn-offs: Democracy, media and power grabbing lower ranking officers
Celebrity Gossip: Being treated for leukemia off and on since January in a plush Singapore hospital.

At #2: Maung Aye, age unknown
Image

Claim to fame: Established and controls all relations with the drug lords in the Golden Triangle.
Most embarassing moment: When his co-Junta buds mistook him for a Japanese salaryman
Hobbies: Hard drinking, plotting to destroy all those that oppose him and embroidery
Little known fact: Voted most likely to destroy the country by his high school classmates until he nullified the votes and placed the school under house arrest

At #1: Than Shwe, 73
Image
Claim to fame: Postal worker turned Head of the ruling junta and army. Regularly surpresses an otherwise beautiful country.
Guiness record: Held the most expensive weddingever held in Burma for his lovely daughter
Superstitions: Has to wipe 2x with the left then 3 x with the right or will be over-thrown.
Recent Zen moment: When his yappy wife and daughter left the countryso he could concentrate his inner evil on crushing the monks.

I'll take that GBoothe.

Send a few Migs and carpet-bomb the goverment compounds for starters.

I know Japan has no Migs but it sounds better than saying send a few F-16s.

Won't work... they don't have the range nor the aerial refueling capabilty to conduct a campaign of airstrikes on a foreign country. Nippon would be hard pressed bombing even North Korea.

And you can't carpet-bomb with F-16s or F-15s. A surgical strike on a command center would be the best they could do.
